The mission of Essential Partners is to foster constructive dialogue where conflict is driven by deep differences in identity, beliefs, and worldview.
Using our novel approach – Reflective Structured Dialogue – we invite people who disagree over tense, controversial issues to meet one another at a level deeper than their ideological disagreement. We focus on the beliefs, values, experiences, and narratives of individuals, allowing them to speak and be heard as they want to be heard. Behind every staunch belief is a person with a story – by sharing our stories, we invite curiosity, connection, and the courage of community to form across divides.
BOARD MEMBER POSITION
The Board of Directors advances the work of Essential Partners (EP) through mission-based advocacy, direct and indirect financial support, cultivation of strategic relationships, and organizational leadership (ethical, legal, etc.). While day-to-day operations are led by Essential Partners’ Executive Director (ED), the Board-ED relationship is an essential partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board in organizational activity is both critical and expected.
Specific Board Member responsibilities include:
Leadership, governance, and oversight:
(1) Serving as trusted advisor to the ED as they develop and implement EP’s strategic plan;
(2) Determining benchmarks and metrics used to evaluate EP’s success / impact, and regularly measuring its performance effectiveness using those standards; reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to Board and committee meetings;
(3) Approving EP’s annual operating budget, audit reports, and material business decisions together with the ED; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities;
(4) Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the ED;
(5) Assisting the ED and Board Chair in identifying and recruiting new Board Members;
(6) Working with ED and other Board Members to ensure Board resolutions are carried out;
(7) Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments as able;
(8) Representing EP to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization;
(9) Ensuring EP’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities we serve.
EP Board Members must consider the organization a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that EP can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, corporate sponsors, organizations, and individuals, EP expects to enjoy 100% of Board Members to “give or get” contributions totaling a minimum of $5,000 per year.
Board terms and participation:
EP Board Members will serve a three-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for up to two additional terms (for a maximum of three consecutive terms). Board meetings will be held quarterly and ad hoc / committee meetings will be held in coordination with full Board meetings. In-person attendance is preferred.
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about EP’s mission and who has a track record of leadership, advocacy, and cultivating key relationships. The candidate’s accomplishments will allow the candidate to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members.
Ideal candidates will possess the following qualifications:
(1) Extensive professional experience with significant leadership accomplishments in business, civic, legal, religious, media, public relations, educational, or international institutions, as well as in philanthropy and/or the nonprofit sector;
(2) A commitment to and understanding of EP’s beneficiaries and the broader ethic of dialogue and deliberation as a means of forging robust relationships and connections in divided communities, preferably (but not necessarily) based upon experience;
(3) Proven diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals and groups;
(4) Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, effective and nuanced communication, and a passion for improving the lives of the people and communities EP serves.
