Assistant Controller: The Assistant Controller, is responsible for providing high-level support to the Controller as they manage a company’s accounting and financial activities. Duties include producing financial summary statements, forecasting a company’s financial health and correcting inaccuracies in a company’s financial records. Manage and direct GSCO Accounting Department to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), not-for profit accounting standards and all internal and external reporting requirements.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support most aspects of accounting management (billing, tax forms, reporting etc.)
  • Assist in the formulation of internal controls and policies to comply with legislation and established best practices.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements in compliance with official guidelines and requirements.
  • Manage journal entries, invoices etc. and reconcile accounts for the monthly or annual closing.
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets or forecasts.
  • Participate in preparation for the annual audit.
  • Help in development of reports for management or regulatory bodies.
  • Review the company’s accounting information to identify and resolve inaccuracies or imbalances.
  • Utilize accounting IT system to facilitate processes and maintain records.
  • Assisting with the development and evaluation of budgets and preparing budget reports.
  • Supporting the formulation and implementation of control systems within the organization.
  • Overseeing accounts payable, accounts receivable, identifying discrepancies, and reconciling accounts.
  • Supporting the accounting department with all aspects of the general ledger.
  • Ensuring strict compliance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Preparing and managing accounts using various software programs.
  • Following changes in regulations and compiling reports regarding compliance issues, standards, and accounting practices.

 

PRIMARY CROSS-FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support and work in tandem with other organizational functions and geographic areas including public relations, membership, resource development, and product sales in order to support organizational mission and goals.
  • Collaborate with the statewide senior leadership team to develop unified direction and guidance in the formulation, integration and implementation of long- and short-term goals, objectives, and action plans.
  • Support the efforts and commitments of Girl Scouts of Colorado in the area of pluralism and diversity throughout the organization and within each community served.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Solid knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and regulations.
  • Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles including non-profit accounting.
  • Knowledge of Abila, Fixed Asset System, RMS/POS point of sale, and Black Baud donor tracking software highly desirable.
  • Proven experience as assistant controller or other similar position.
  • Excellent knowledge of accounting and financial processes (budgeting, financial closure, reporting etc.).
  • Understanding of data analysis and forecasting.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (especially excel) and accounting software (e.g. SAP).
  • Well-organized with ability to prioritize.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving ability.

 

Education or Formal Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field or equivalent experience required, advanced degree preferred.
  • CPA desired
  • Coursework in basic auditing procedures and fund accounting highly desired.

 

Experience

  • Supervisory experience in an accounting department including supervision of both clerical and accountant level positions.
  • Experience in working with diverse populations of staff and volunteers, demonstrated personal and professional commitment to pluralism.
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting.

 

Material and Equipment Directly Used

  • Computer and related software, telephone, e-mail, copiers and equipment commonly found in an office/home office environment.

 

Salary:

  • This position pays a salaried rate of $85,000 – $95,000 per year.
