Archaeologist/Monitor – New York City/Northern New Jersey

Richard Grubb & Associates (RGA) is seeking an archaeologist for monitoring projects located in New York City and Northern/Central New Jersey. It is anticipated that the monitoring projects may collectively last through 2027. Although this position would be dedicated to monitoring projects, as workload allows, there would be additional opportunities to work on other types of projects/survey types as well.

Applicants should be available to travel to project sites within New York City or New Jersey. Additional projects may be located primarily in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast and may also be located in other parts of the U.S. and its territories. Prior work experience in the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast region is preferred. Local candidates within commuting distance to Central/Northern New Jersey and/or New York City, Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) designation, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) badged, and Secure Worker Access Consortium (SWAC) badged will be given preference.

The pay range for this position is 25.00 – 30.00 per hour depending on qualifications.

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Observe and document construction activities within archaeologically sensitive areas
  • Maintain detailed notes, organized field data, and files
  • Communicate daily with project managers to ensure that project goals are being met
  • Interact in a professional manner with subcontractors and project team members on site daily
  • Review and maintain quality control of all field and artifact data;
  • Contribute to technical reports, if necessary

Qualified applicants must possess:

  • Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field (SOI qualified);
  • One-two years of monitoring or supervisory field experience required;
  • Experience in identifying, and documenting pre-contact and historic artifacts, cultural features, and archaeological sites;
  • Be capable of preparing accurate scaled profile and plan view line drawings of identified features/soil profiles and plotting feature locations on field maps;
  • Communication and problem-solving skills;
  • Familiarity with working around heavy machinery on a construction site;
  • Ability to work with a staff team;
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation;
  • Ability and willingness to travel;
  • Experience using a Trimble Geo7x or similar handheld GPS is preferred;
  • The position may require the candidate to traverse up to 10 miles per day for survey fieldwork and frequently move equipment weighing up to 40 pounds;
  • Willingness to attend OSHA training.

 

This is a full-time position and compensation includes a complete benefits package.
