Job Description
- Ensure archaeological resources associated with transportation projects are properly accounted for and that any impacts to those resources are avoided, minimized, or appropriately mitigated.
- Work independently managing and conducting archaeological investigations for transportation projects across North Carolina.
- Interact with engineers, project managers, and federal/state regulatory agencies.
- Prepare archaeological technical memoranda (reports) supporting the sections of environmental documents or permits.
- Collect, evaluate, analyze, and tabulate data in support of project delivery.
- Implement terms of the 2020 Programmatic Agreement with the State Historic Preservation Office, Federal Highway Administration, US Army Corps of Engineers, and US Forest Service.
- Develop mitigation plans for unavoidable impacts to archaeological resources.
- Make complex technical decisions.
- Review work completed by others.
- Provide training in cultural resources management.
- Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulatory requirements as they pertain to transportation – NEPA/SEPA, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 4(f) of the US DOT Act of 1966 and NC General Statue 121-12(a).
- Knowledge of archaeological techniques, methods, and theories pertaining to Southeastern U.S. archaeology emphasizing North Carolina prehistory and history.
- Experience in all phases of archaeological work, supervising field crews in the scientific excavation of archaeological sites, and laboratory analyses of archaeological materials.
- Experience producing archaeology reports, writing research designs and/or data recovery plans, and working from those documents to formulate Scopes of Work for submittal to archaeological consultants and state/federal agencies.
- Computer experience with ArcGIS, including ArcCatalog, ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, or other web mapping services, GPS Units, and associated desktop software.
- Master’s degree or higher in North American archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field; or
- Bachelor’s degree in North American archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field, and
- 6+ years of archaeological experience;
- or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
