We have an exciting opportunity to join our Analytical Chemistry Group.  UKCEH have world class laboratories with cutting edge instruments. We combine a high-quality standard of analyses (UKAS – accredited to ISO17025:2017) with innovation.

 

You will be focusing on stable isotope analyses, in a wide range of environmental samples, to assist in the understanding of a multitude of environmental questions, and for a wide range of science areas. You will also support the organic and inorganic chemistry laboratories according to demand. Together with the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of a pool of analytical instruments, writing SOPs and validating new instruments and methods.

 

We can carry out analysis of 15N, 13C, 34S, 18O and 2H in ecological matrices – gases, water, plants, soils, among others!   A background in ecology would be advantageous, with an understanding of the C, N, S and water cycles in nature. Stable isotope analysis experience is desirable.

 

This is an entirely laboratory-based role, without a fieldwork component.

 

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing materials, equipment and resources for laboratory analyses
  • Sample management
  • Developing and validating new methods and instruments, writing SOPs
  • Sample preparation (drying, weighing, grinding) and sample extraction
  • Operating, maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory instruments
  • General laboratory housekeeping duties including:- safe storage of chemicals (COSHH), maintaining a safe and tidy laboratory environment, ensuring the supply of consumable items, stock rotation and waste disposal
  • Liaising with suppliers of laboratory equipment and chemicals
  • Working within the laboratory’s quality system and ISO17025

 

For the role of Analytical Chemistry Technician, we’re looking for somebody who has:

  • A degree in Environmental Chemistry or closely related area, or equivalent experience, with knowledge in ecology
  • Experience gained in an accredited or similarly regulated busy, scientific research laboratory
  • Proven experience in operating laboratory instruments. Stable isotope instrument experience would be advantageous
  • Demonstrable experience in method validation
  • The ability to produce high quality and reproducible data
  • Good numeracy and mathematical skills, including experience of using Microsoft Excel to plot and calculate results
  • Proven skills of good health and safety best practice, within a laboratory environment, including familiarity with COSHH and Risk Assessment processes, chemical handling and safe storage
  • Good communication and organisation skills, able to work as part of a team, and work independently to manage own tasks effectively, seeking guidance where appropriate
  • A flexible and adaptable approach, able to adapt in a changing environment, with a constructive approach to problem-solving
  • Experience of working in a laboratory accredited to ISO 17025:2005 would be beneficial
