The GIST is a female-founded startup that is all about leveling the playing field. We create sports content, experiences and community that are by women and for all sports fans mainly through our free, localized twice-weekly newsletter that gives you “the gist” of what’s going on in the sports world in an authentic, fun and female voice. Our vision is to become the go-to source for sports for underserved fans.

Since launching in July 2018, we’ve grown our community to over 160,000 GISTers across North America, have worked with brands like Molson Coors, adidas and Columbia University, and our founding team has been named to Forbes 30 Under 30 2020.

As The GIST continues to grow, we’re looking for a kickass Fact Checker to join our small but mighty team. Reporting to The GIST’s Head of Content (HOC), you’ll be responsible for fact-checking all national and North American sections for The GIST’s twice-weekly newsletter (sent Mondays and Thursdays).

If you’re a self-starter with a love of editing and research, an amazing eye for detail and a deep-burning desire to level the playing field in the sports industry, then this is the job for you.

What you’ll be doing

  • Fact-checking The GIST’s US, Canadian and North American twice-weekly newsletter on Sunday and Wednesday nights
    • Double-checking scores, statistics, spelling, dates, times and other miscellaneous facts to ensure accuracy and journalistic integrity
  • Performing the final review and edits of the newsletter in The GIST’s email service provider, Campaign Monitor, before it’s scheduled to be sent out
  • Work closely with The GIST’s newsletter contributors, editors, operations associate and HOC
  • Opportunity to fact-check and edit other GIST content
  • Other duties as required

What you’ll need

  • Fact-checking or editing experience of at least two years is preferred
    • Experience fact-checking or editing in a newsroom setting is an asset
    • Experience fact-checking or editing sports journalism is an asset
  • Undergraduate degree in Journalism, Editing, English, or a similar field
  • A flexible Sunday and Wednesday night schedule, because sports

We’re looking for someone who: 

  • Is an expert on writing with the American Style Guide
  • Loves and values research
  • Has strong journalistic integrity
  • Loves grammar
  • Is a skilled communicator who’s able to provide constructive feedback
  • Has strong sports knowledge and intuition
  • Has a collaborative and sports-loving spirit
  • Has experience working toward a deadline, and can work quickly and efficiently
  • Values hard work and teamwork
  • Is a quick and resourceful learner who can thrive in a fast-paced, evolving startup setting and is able to grow with the company

This a remote, part-time (two newsletters per week) three-month contract role with the opportunity to extend.
