The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The salary range for this position is $109,134-180,071/year. New hires are typically brought into the organization between $115,000-140,000/year, based on education and experience. Location & Schedule

 

This position is located at the Wellington Webb Building, located at 201 W Colfax Ave. Denver, CO 80202.

 

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees’ physical work location is based upon the position’s job duties and requirements, customer service and responsiveness, team and individual performance, and business needs and requirements. Our current practice requires in-office work for all employees for a minimum of three days per week. Business needs and initial onboarding may require additional days in the office.

 

In this role, you can expect the training period (first month) will be all in office. After training period, schedule is hybrid (3 days in office) with flexible start/end times per the CPD policy. 9/80 flex schedule optional after successful completion of 6 month probationary period.

The City and County of Denver’s Community Planning and Development Department (CPD) is seeking a highly motivated Structural Plans Review Engineer (PRE) to join our Development Services Division.

 

In this role, you will perform structural reviews on projects ranging from basic to highly complex designs, ensuring compliance with applicable building codes and standards such as the International Building Code (IBC) and ASCE 7. Additionally, you will expand your expertise by reviewing architectural components of building designs, while managing a diverse range of multi-family residential and commercial project reviews, including new construction and renovations. This position is critical in evaluating design and construction documents for regulatory compliance, as well as supporting Denver’s commitment to safe, sustainable, and innovative development.

 

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Review and evaluate architectural and structural construction documents submitted for approval utilizing applicable codes, standards, policies, laws, appropriate municipal ordinances, and construction and engineering standards to approved documents for city construction permits
  • Check engineering calculations and provide timely written communication detailing design and/or construction deficiencies in plans and specifications
  • Interact with the public, professional design consultants, project managers, contractors, and elected officials to communicate permit application procedures, regulatory code requirements, and interpretations
  • Engage in design coordination meetings for private development projects as well as city, state, and regional capital improvement initiatives to guide the development process, facilitate timely approvals and project completion, and proactively identify and resolve potential issues.
  • Assist inspectors with interpretation of difficult or unusual code compliance issues and answer questions from inspectors about plan review comments or non-compliances issues in the field.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, and specifications for CPD. Assess the effectiveness of existing methods and practices, recommend improvements, and propose modifications to local and national model codes. Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:​

  • A minimum of five years of structural design experience with a wide variety of buildings (both multi-family residential and commercial), structural materials (steel, concrete, light gauge metal, wood, masonry), and lateral force resisting systems (moment frame, shear wall, braced frame, cantilever column, flexible, rigid, and semi-rigid diaphragms)
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and enforce the intent of the building codes and referenced standards
  • Experience using Bluebeam Revu preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Efficiently demonstrates excellent time/work management skills with strong attention to detail and is highly organized

 

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional engineering experience after obtaining a Professional Engineering (PE) license. Additional directly related engineering experience can be substituted for up to two (2) years of the three (3) years of post-licensed experience
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted
  • License/Certifications: Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers at the time of application. Registration in another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado registration at completion of probation
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
