The Challenge
We are hiring an entry-level Traffic Analysis Engineer to join our Traffic Survey team.
 
In this role, you will:
    • Report to the Traffic Analysis Supervisor and support all Traffic Survey Group (TSG) sections and staff.
    • Perform engineering and technical tasks related to planning, processing, analyzing, and publishing generated traffic monitoring data to meet Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) reporting requirements and support NCDOT transportation planning activities to maintain a Traffic Monitoring System.
    • Assist with the development of new traffic monitoring practices to satisfy future FHWA traffic data requirements – a task for which engineering judgement is essential.
    • Assist with the maintenance of traffic segments using GIS applications, GIS development and publications, our year-end processes leading to HPMS traffic data submittal, data and attribute quarterly audits, evaluating new processes and applications, and the creation/maintenance of procedural documents.
    • Oversee our Project Count Program.
    • Serve as an intermediary between project requesters and data collectors.
    • Work with project requesters to generate accurate timelines and a lists of station locations/collection count types.
    • Track workflow and processes to ensure projects are delivered on time.
    • Process vendor data files and upload them into our Traffic Count Database System (TCDS).
    • Be a team leader for our TSG Analysis Section.
    • Assist with the creation and updating of documents for training new employees.
    • Work with support staff to develop new processes to enhance data analysis and management processes of the Traffic Analysis Section.
    • Review areas where new facilities have been opened to determine where new traffic data coverage stations should be created.
    • Respond to more complex traffic data requests and provide support to staff performing other functions of the group on an as-needed basis.
    • Investigate and correct high-level quality control issues in any of the traffic monitoring data sets and systems.
    • Perform traffic station and segmentation edits in our Traffic Survey Group’s operating applications.
    • Review and analyze short-term and continuous traffic monitoring data sets on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.
    • Process small to large datasets, perform quality control and quality assurance, and analyze small to large data traffic datasets.
    • Supply traffic monitoring data sets, including seasonal data, vehicle classification data, annual average daily traffic data, and other information generated for individual and groups of traffic monitoring stations.
What You Bring
    • Knowledge of traffic monitoring concepts, traffic flow characteristics, data collection techniques, procedures, standards (FHWA-Traffic Monitoring Guide, and AASHTO-Traffic Data Programs), and equipment.
    • Demonstrated ability to identify and investigate data anomalies in large and complex datasets by using data comparison tools.
    • Knowledge of statistics and its application to data analysis and quality control.
    • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and perform tasks of low to high complexity, set short and long-term goals, and to ability to prioritize work daily with limited supervision.
    • Demonstrated ability to use verbal and nonverbal communication to effectively and concisely convey routine technical information for training internal and external customers.
    • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent and timely customer service to meet customer needs.
 
Education & Experience
    • Bachelors degree in Engineering; or
    • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
  
Note
    • We may require registration as a professional engineer with the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
