About Shrimp Welfare Project
Shrimp Welfare Project is an ACE Recommended Charity in the Effective Altruism space. Effective Altruism (EA) and the idea that sentient beings deserve consideration are the core values that our team shares. EA is a philosophical and social movement that advocates the use of evidence and reasoning to determine the most effective ways to benefit others. Learn more at effectivealtruism.org – it’s really important for us!
Our mission is to improve the welfare of billions of shrimps, in the most cost-effective way possible. To achieve this, we have the following interventions:
- Corporate Engagement: We collaborate with global producers, seafood suppliers, and retailers to improve farming practices, especially in harvest and slaughter.
- Farmer Engagement – India: Sustainable Shrimp Farmers of India (SSFI) promotes the best welfare-focused practices in shrimp farming. This is done through offering improved sustainability standards, technical assistance, enhanced reputation, access to training and resources, networking opportunities, and marketing support.
- Policy & Research: SWP is actively engaged in numerous research projects, allowing us to investigate and tackle our key uncertainties. As a result, we produce reports that disseminate our findings to a wider audience.
- Outreach: SWP team members and our advisors have authored a number of articles, given talks and appeared on podcasts which are intended to give an overview of some of the critical aspects of shrimp welfare.
