Job Summary – Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Specialist
The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Specialist is responsible for supporting the application of EDI practices and principles throughout CGLCC’s programs, initiatives, events, and operations. Reporting to the Director, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, the EDI Specialist works closely with the Director, EDI to aid in meeting CGLCC’s day-to-day EDI needs and organization-wide EDI goals.
The purpose of the EDI Specialist role is to:
· Support the implementation of EDI practices from an intersectional and anti-oppressive lens throughout CGLCC’s core programs and operations
· Support CGLCC’s efforts to increase organizational capacity for serving entrepreneurs with intersecting equity deserving identities from 2SLGBTQI+ communities
· Assist in advancing CGLCC’s commitment to greater inclusion both within internal operations of the organization and externally through programs and outreach strategies
· Ensure all CGLCC initiatives support and advance equity, diversity, and inclusion
Core Responsibilities
The EDI Specialist’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
● Applying EDI frameworks using an intersectional and anti-oppressive lens to all tasks and assignments, and when providing insight and guidance in support of CGLCC’s activities and programming
● Reviewing and identifying EDI gaps in CGLCC’s online content, reports, and print materials
● Providing constructive EDI feedback that includes educative content on why the recommended changes are being made
● Supporting the delivery and administration of EDI initiatives, projects, and professional development opportunities
● Working with CGLCC staff to assist on the integration of EDI practices in various programs, event planning, and policy work across all departments
● Conducting EDI assessments/audits of operating procedures, policies, programs, and certification processes
● Researching specific EDI topics using reputable sources and preparing briefings on findings
Experience & Key Competencies
Education
An undergraduate degree in social sciences, gender studies, or related field is required. Graduate-level education with a central focus on EDI, anti-oppression, intersectionality, and applied critical theory is preferred.
Please note, educational requirements may be waived if relevant employment experience, core EDI and anti-oppression competencies, and key skillsets for the role can be demonstrated.
Professional Experience
A minimum of 3 years of professional experience specializing in EDI is required. Relevant experience may include roles such as an EDI or human rights consultant, advisor, educator etc.
Required Skillsets
● Exceptional critical thinking skills with the ability to apply intersecting anti-oppressive theories when analyzing, assessing, and seeking resolutions to complex problems
● Excellent organizational skills
● Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing day-to-day needs
● Ability to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines
● Ability to shift focus and re-prioritize tasks when required
● Detail oriented with exceptional reading comprehension, writing, copyediting, and presentation skills in English on EDI topics.
● Strong relationship building, communication, and teaching skills
● Proven project management experience
● Demonstrated ability to plan, execute, and deliver on key initiatives
● Ability to work independently and in collaboration with CGLCC staff and partners
Required EDI Knowledge
● Extensive knowledge on critical theories informing principles of equity and anti-oppression; thorough understanding of forms of oppression such as racism, sexism, and transphobia
● Strong understanding of equity issues and forms of systemic oppression within a Canadian context
● Understanding of the relationships between the continued impacts of colonization, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, and economic development in Canada
● Strong understanding of protected grounds under Canada’s Human Rights Act, and forms of discrimination and harassment
Required EDI Competencies and Experience
● Demonstrated experience applying EDI expertise to assess, analyse, problem-solve, and inform recommendations from an anti-oppressive and intersectional lens in workplace settings
● Experience with EDI strategy development and implementation practices within organizations
● Ability to effectively communicate complex EDI concepts to individuals who have varying levels of understanding on EDI topics
● Experience using sound judgment and discretion when receiving EDI concerns and complaints
● Self-awareness of one’s own positionality
● Extensive experience with 2SLGBTQI+ communities is required
● Experience working with equity deserving groups is required
● Lived experience as a member of an equity deserving group(s) is required
Additional Assets (desired but not required)
● Experience developing and providing feedback on EDI-centred workplace policies
● Experience working with EDI-centred government policies and legislative documents
● Ability to apply an intersectional lens through lived experience
● Training and/or experience in conflict resolution and trauma-informed approaches
● Experience working with business communities or entrepreneurs from equity deserving groups
● Experience working in a not-for-profit environment
● Fluency in French is strongly preferred
Terms of Employment
The EDI Specialist role is a full-time, remote position based in Canada. The EDI Specialist reports to the Director, EDI.
Compensation
Salary will be based on skills and experience, within the annual salary range of $65,000 – $80,000.
Additional benefits round out the compensation package, including group benefit plan coverage, annual vacation, and a generous public holiday schedule including paid time off between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
