New Higher Pay: $31,688 – $55,453
The Challenge
We are hiring a transportation worker II to join our Rowan County Maintenance team.
 
In this role, you will:
    • Install traffic and erosion control devices involved in road maintenance and construction activities.
    • Operate heavy equipment, including small and tandem dump trucks.
    • Operate hand, and power tools.
    • Clear right of ways.
    • Repair pavement.
    • Assist with pipe installation and other drainage tasks
    • Inventory materials.
    • Shovel, rake asphalt, flag traffic, and perform ditching.
    • Oversee inmate work details.
  
What You Bring
    • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
    • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
    • Experience in 2+ pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment: asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck with aerial device.
    • Experience in 1+ of the following: pipe installation, erosion control device installation, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance, or asphalt patching.
    • Experience performing drainage maintenance activities, such as shoulder/ditch maintenance, pipe installation, and drainage structures.
    • A Commercial Driver’s License to operate equipment/trucks with manual and automatic transmissions. (Don’t have it? STILL APPLY! You can get it through our on-the-job training within 360 days of hire).
    • Ability to get an inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety.  
    • Steel toe shoes.
    • Good eyesight (glasses/contacts are ok).
    • You are 21+ years old.
Notes
    • You will be expected to work in emergency situations and bad weather in outside and inside environmental conditions, including extreme cold, heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and oils.
    • We will conduct a pre-employment drug test, criminal background check, and a background check of your previous employers for the past 3 years for drug/alcohol abuse.
    • This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during bad weather/extreme circumstances.
 
Education & Experience
    • High school/GED diploma, and
    • 3+ years  experience operating relevant equipment; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
