Full-Time Bridge Engineering Technician II
Job Description
- Gather preliminary field information for bridge replacement projects and purchase order contracts to be performed by force account or contract.
- Review project plans for constructability, correctness, and completeness.
- Investigate and coordinate utility relocations and right of way issues.
- Work with the Division Bridge Maintenance Engineer to monitor project schedules.
- Serve as an inspector for contractors working on contract projects.
- Provide technical guidance to bridge maintenance, repair, and replacement of bridges and pipe in excess of 48” in diameter.
- Perform investigations, reviews, and assignments as directed by the Bridge Maintenance Engineer.
- Respond to inquiries from the public, NCDOT staff, and other government agencies regarding bridge projects.
- A working knowledge and understanding of NCDOT concepts, practices, and theories used in highway construction.
- Knowledge and skill in the use of computers, software and basic mathematics.
- Knowledge and understanding of contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
- Experience conducting compliance inspections with contract agreements and specifications.
- Experience sampling and testing materials to evaluate acceptance.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive communications between technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public.
- Apply independent decision making and good judgement.
- Ability to document and take some corrective actions and apply safety philosophy and program to all operations.
- Ability to complete daily diaries, survey notes. and other recordkeeping manually and electronically.
- Be able to perform construction related math calculations.
- Ability to acquire certifications, including QMS Asphalt, Concrete Testing, Borrow Pit Sampling and MSHA Certifications.
- Strength to lift 40 to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in high traffic areas, and at heights over water or traffic and in extreme temperatures.
- Agility to traverse uneven terrain.
- Able to work at night and weekends, if necessary.
- Safety toe shoes.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
- 2+ years relevant technician-level experience; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
