Job Description
- Support senior engineering technicians and engineers in construction inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, and construction traffic control.
- Perform data entry of specific project information into our HiCAMS system, including sampling, materials received including bill of materials, pay record quantities including ticket items, and densities including soil and asphalt.
- Verify final estimate quantities and data with respect to work accomplished on construction projects.
- Perform standardized and non-standardized tests and assignments in compiling, analyzing, computing, editing, and processing field data.
- Drive or place survey stakes, operate surveying instruments, cut brush, run tests on materials, or inspect roadways and bridge projects in accordance with established NCDOT policies and procedures.
- Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.
- Customer service experience related to solving problems involving explaining complicated engineering concepts to customer groups.
- Computer skills using laptops, iPads, and software apps.
- Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports.
- Knowledge of standards and specifications and plan reading experience.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Good eyesight to use testing instruments, read plan details, make accurate field measurements and inspect roadway and structure components.
- Ability to perform entry level technical work in a specific materials area or perform sampling, testing and inspection duties to determine specifications and serve as a survey crew member.
- Ability to exercise limited decision making and judgment.
- Ability to safely perform manual tasks involving the use of bush axes and other tools on steep slopes and rough terrain.
- You can work effectively outside in various weather, terrains, and hours.
- Strength to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to obtain and maintain certifications to perform materials sampling and testing.
- Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.
- Computer skills using laptops, iPads, and software.
- Customer service experience interacting with the public.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Good note taking skills.
- Good communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise activities of junior staff and instruct them in proper work methods.
- Safety toe shoes.
- Strong attention to detail for proficient record keeping.
- You may have to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours when necessary.
- You may be exposed to high traffic volumes, work at heights over water or traffic, and have to climb on bridge substructures and superstructures.
- You will have to attend and pass certifications for sampling and testing classes and will need to obtain and maintain QMS Asphalt and Concrete Testing Certifications.
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related curriculum; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
