The Challenge
We are hiring a strategic Director of our Integrated Mobility team that is a newly established Division recognizing that the way people move is changing rapidly and this Division is tasked with preparing the State for the way we move today and the way we will move in the future.
 
In this role, you will:
    • Provide leadership, direction, and supervision of NC’s non-motorized, new mobility, transit, bicycling and pedestrian activities, including a large team of in-house staff, consultants, contractors, and partners.
    • Oversee NCDOT’s Complete Streets policy that requires construction projects include relevant non-automobile-based transportation options in their plans.
    • Plan, evaluate, and establish long range programs, goals, and priorities.
    • Serve as a technical expert reviewing, approving, and making recommendations on final decisions on complex, sensitive, and controversial issues within the Division.
    • Review, evaluate, and make final decisions on budgetary issues.
What You Bring
    • A strong background in program direction and engineering, with the ability to serve as an integral part of design and construction teams.
    • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of transportation engineering and planning relating to public transportation, pedestrian, and bicycle-oriented transportation, and associated accommodations, and the interrelationship of motorized and non-motorized modes with other transportation modes.
    • Knowledge of professional engineering theory, techniques, practices, and procedures related to design, construction and operations, and maintenance methods, materials and equipment related to multimodal roadway, transit, and non-motorized transportation options.
    • Thorough knowledge of federal and NC policies relating to funds administration and knowledge of the activities and practices of the Department of Transportation, MPOs, and RPOs.
    • Knowledge of federal transit programs and how the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) functions.
    • Knowledge of FHWA functions and programs and specifically as they are related to new mobility, bicycling, pedestrian, scooters, etc.
    • Ability to understand initiatives and develop actions and programs for their progression.
    • Ability to solve problems by evaluating and assessing options and solutions and developing creative solutions.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written forms.
    • Ability to organize and direct the activities of professional staff.
    • Ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationships with other state, local, and federal contacts, sub-recipients, private transportation providers, human service providers, their clients, and the public.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and monitor progress through completion.
    • Ability to organize and direct activities of professionals, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with  State, federal, and local government officials, leaders, and representatives of private concerns.
    • Ability to develop, analyze, interpret, and apply policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge of the transportation modes and their interrelationship.
    • Advanced computer skills and understanding of data processing needs of the Division, including Microsoft Office, mapping, and the extraction of systems data to meet reporting and organization of information.
    • Broad understanding of technologies used in transit, their benefits, and their role as problem solving tools.
Notes
    • We may require you to become registered as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
Education & Experience
    • Bachelors degree in Engineering, and
    • 7+ years of engineering experience, and
    • 4+ years supervisory experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
