Full-Time Director of Campus Safety
Job Description
Elmira College is a private liberal arts College located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Seeking innovative professionals from diverse backgrounds to fill the position of Director of Campus Safety to join the Campus Safety team.
The Director is responsible for the security and safety of a diverse community of students, faculty, staff and visitors of Elmira College. S/he will be the primary point of contact and liaison with external law enforcement agencies (local, state, and federal) and emergency response organizations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervise, monitor, train, and assess the performance of Campus Safety staff;
- Oversee compliance with federal Clery & Violence Against Women Acts (VAWA), and NYS Education Law Articles 129-A & 129-B;
- Serve as the chairperson of the Crisis Management Team and organize meetings and trainings as appropriate;
- Develop and implement crime prevention strategies including targeted security patrols, behavioral intervention, community awareness training, student orientation training, etc.;
- Investigate crimes and incidents occurring at the College, including coordination with external law enforcement and investigative agencies;
- Establish structure and improve the department’s organization and function by developing departmental policies and procedures related to security and safety, and by applying sound management practices;
- Oversight of campus access and key control;
- Analyze, make decisions, and assume responsibility for the daily operations of Campus Safety staff on a 24 hour per day and seven day a week basis.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Master’s degree in higher education, student services administration, or related field is preferred, Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required with 5 years of related experience.
- Previous law enforcement, military, or security experience preferably at the supervisor level;
- Understanding of federal and state statues and laws pertaining to campus safety, Clery Act, VAWA, and Enough is Enough law.
- Knowledgeable in crisis management and intervention.
- Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office, Google Apps, Maxient, and ERP software such as Jenzabar or the ability to learn as needed.
- Supervisory and leadership experience is essential to the position, including conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated ability to use discretion, good judgment, and maintain confidentiality.

BASIS OF PAY: Salary, Exempt

- A base starting salary of $55,000 – $60,000.
WORKING CONDITIONS: This position involves standard office work which may require repetitive motion and sitting for extended periods of time and physical capability to effectively use and operate office equipment, such as personal computer. Employee will balance, bend, kneel, twist, reach, and carry, push or pull moderate amount of weight. Regularly required to have full range of mobility in upper and lower body. Work environment may involve some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require safety precautions. Employee may be required to use provided defensive equipment to defend themselves or others. Frequent travel on campus and through buildings which require walking, climbing stairs and exposure to outside weather. This position requires frequent evening and weekend responsibilities, particularly during the academic year.
