Director of Development

The Institute for Applied Tinkering (IAT) (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) is seeking an experienced Director of Development to be part of the Administrative Team at the Institute for Applied Tinkering.

The Institute for Applied Tinkering is an organization dedicated to building a 21st-century model of education. Over the past 15 years we’ve brought child-centric, collaborative, hands-on education experiences to children in many different ways: sleep-away camp, K-12 school, day camp, after-school programs, teacher workshops, and more. Thousands of kids, parents, and educators attest to the richness and lasting impact of the experiences we deliver.

The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Design and implement a comprehensive, strategic plan which focuses on the current fiscal health of the organization and provides future financial resources for growth and expansion. 

  • Oversees and manages the Annual and Vision Fund including strategies, logistics, tracking, and outreach.

  • Creates plans for new fundraising events including inaugural gala, meet / greet events, and tours with the broader community.

  • Expands the reach of fundraising efforts from focusing on parents in the community by identifying and nurturing relationships with ideal donors in the tech and business leaders in the Bay Area.

  • Matches ideal donors to the various divisions within the IAT (BWX, TS, and Curious Educators).

  • Approach current and potential donors with a strong narrative of our mission; generate engaging donor communications including the annual report.

  • Collects, organizes, and maintains a complete and accurate database of donors and funding received.

Qualifications (Required)

  • Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s degree preferred

  • Minimum of five years of fundraising experience 

  • Proven track record of meeting fundraising goals and securing major gifts

  • A gifted storyteller who can identify the seeds of important stories in our organization and communicate them to the larger community

  • A demonstrated passion for the IAT’s mission

  • Nonprofit and/or private school experience is preferred, but not required

  • Proven ability to bring an organization to the next level in terms of fundraising

  • Demonstrated ability to develop creative and out-of-the-box approaches to fundraising

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate well and relate to donors as well as  students, parents, staff, faculty, and others

  • Strong prospect identification and qualification skills

  • Detail-oriented and organized

  • Comfortable working in a collaborative and fluid environment

  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills

  • A creative mindset, someone who isn’t afraid to try new approaches to fundraising and development

Requirements

  • This position is an Exempt, full-time position

  • Work days are hybrid 3 days on and 2 days remote

Wages/Benefits

This is a full-time exempt position. The salary range estimate is $100,000 to $130,000 based on the candidate’s experience. Benefits include vacation, medical benefits, and paid sick leave.
