Full-Time Campus Safety Officer
Job Description
Elmira College is a private liberal arts College located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Seeking innovative professionals from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds to fill the position of Campus Safety Officer to join the open and welcoming Campus Safety team.
The Campus Safety Officer is responsible for promoting lawful behavior and protecting the welfare of students, faculty, staff, and visitors as a uniformed presence on campus. The Campus Safety officer performs foot and vehicle patrols of campus to monitor behavior, secure buildings and property, investigate disturbances, maintain order during events and, enforce student code of conduct, college policies, and state and local laws.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responds to incidents, monitors, and protects facilities and assets, reports incidents, investigates incidents and follows through with law enforcement authorities as directed by the Director of Campus Safety;
- Responsible for conducting regular foot and vehicle patrol as well as surveillance for the entire college campus;
- Take necessary measures to safeguard the lives and property of all members of the college community and of visitors to the campus;
- Mobilizes local law enforcement and/or appropriate community or campus agencies in situations involving campus disturbances and individual physical or mental illnesses which in his/her best judgment cannot be resolved through immediately available college resources;
- Prevents unauthorized persons from entering the buildings and grounds of the college;
- Submits a daily officer report that is clear, accurate, and informative, indicating all significant activities and conditions occurring during the tour of duty. Call specific attention to health, safety, and maintenance problems. Follows up on correction of said problems;
- Respond to emergency maintenance calls. Contacts appropriate maintenance personnel when necessary;
- Investigates violations of college regulations, criminal, civil law, and other complaints committed by or against the college. Provides the Director of Campus Safety and other appropriate college administrators with specific reports documenting the incident;
- Enforces parking and traffic regulations on campus;
- Renders first aid.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess a valid NYS Security Guard License or willingness to obtain license within 6 months of employment;
- Ability to maintain confidential information;
- Basic computer skills encompassing Microsoft Office, Jenzabar, Maxient, and others;
- Possess organizational skills;
- Valid driver’s license and ability to successfully complete DOT check as required by college auto liability insurance;
- Possess CPR and First Aid certification, or successfully complete once employed;
- Ability to work a flexible schedule which will include nights, weekends, on call, and holidays.

WORKING CONDITIONS: This position involves standard office work which may require repetitive motion and sitting for extended periods of time and physical capability to effectively use and operate office equipment such as personal computer. Employee is regularly required to stand and walk for extended periods of time, and climb stairs. Employee will balance, bend, kneel, twist, reach, and carry, push, or pull moderate amount of weight. Regularly required to have full range of mobility in upper and lower body. Work environment may involve some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require safety precautions. Employee may be required to use provided defensive equipment to defend themselves or others. Night, weekend, and holiday shifts will be required.
