Job Description

SAGE
Senior Director of Human Resources
Job Description

Background:
SAGE is the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults. A national organization with a mission to lead in addressing issues related to LGBT aging, SAGE offers supportive services and consumer resources for LGBT older adults and their caregivers; advocates for public policy changes that address the needs of LGBT older people; and, through its National Resource Center on LGBT Aging and its growing social enterprise SAGECare, provides cultural competency training and technical assistance for aging providers, corporations, and LGBT organizations.

SAGE was founded in New York City in 1978 by a group of activists who recognized that LGBT people did not have the community support they needed to age successfully. From its early years, SAGE created numerous original programs, many of which are still in existence today and have been duplicated around the country. SAGE’s elder service program in New York City now includes five SAGE Centers, a robust case management program, and a variety of other programs. In 2019 and 2020, SAGE and its developer partners will open New York City’s first two affordable housing developments with an LGBT older adult focus.

Over the past decade, SAGE has grown into a leading national organization in the LGBT and aging sectors. Community-based providers nationwide look to SAGE for its pioneering program models, training and technical assistance. SAGE is widely recognized as the leader on LGBT aging issues in the US, and has begun to expand its work internationally. Today, SAGE coordinates a growing network of 29 SAGE affiliates in 22 states and Puerto Rico. Beyond New York City, SAGE has staff in ten states and Washington, DC.

SAGE recognizes that in order to create lasting change, policymakers at the local, state and federal level must take into full account the needs of LGBT older adults when crafting public policies. To that end, SAGE has partnered with organizations around the country to drive local and state advocacy, and runs a Federal Policy Office in Washington, DC. As one reflection of its equity commitment, SAGE is a founding member of the Diverse Elders Coalition and works in close partnership with organizations like the National Hispanic Council on Aging and the National Center on Black Aging.

SAGE is governed by a 26-person Board of Directors and operates with an annual budget in excess of $14 million.
