Full-Time Engineering Technician I – ENTRY LEVEL!
Job Description
- Perform routine inspections on contractor construction projects to ensure compliance with contract plans, specifications, and standard drawings.
- Conduct inspections for driveway permits, encroachments, and District-administered contracts such as Contract Resurfacing, etc.
- Maintain daily pay records and diaries in accordance with NCDOT Standards and Specifications.
- Ensure all materials in the project are sampled/tested per NCDOT guidelines.
- Prepare documentation for preparation of pay estimates to the contractor (District contracts only).
- Attain NCDOT certifications for asphalt roadway paving, concrete testing, density, Aggregate and Borrow Pit sampling, and other certification as required/needed.
- Monitor all project subcontractors to ensure adequate Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE)/Women-Owned/Diversity-owned business participation per the contract.
- Perform labor interviews.
- Assist contractor’s staff and other technicians in interpreting plans, contracts, and specifications.
- Serve as liaison between the contractor and NCDOT and between NCDOT and the public.
- Drive s pickup truck, carryall, or automobile.
- Inspect the following: asphalt lay down; stone base construction; chemical stabilization; construction of fill sections; undercut; seeding/mulching; major concrete structures; curb and gutter; milling; driving piles; construction of drilled shafts; signal/sign installation; drainage; utility construction; erosion control; pavement markings; work zone traffic control; and concrete pavement.
- Maintain effective working relations with other staff and the public.
- Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
- You work best in a team environment to complete assignments.
- Customer service experience related to resolving problems involving explaining complicated engineering concepts to customer groups.
- Knowledge of standards and specifications and plan reading experience.
- Computer skills using laptops, iPads, and software.
- Good verbal and written communications skills.
- Ability to establish positive lines of communication between technicians, engineers, and contractors, and apply safety philosophy and program to all operations.
- Safety toe shoes.
- Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related field; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
- We prefer candidates with a driver’s license.
- You may be required to work at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays to fulfill inspection and surveying needs.
- You may be subject to outside conditions including noise and hazards from vehicles and construction machinery.
