Programs & Events Internship

Purpose of the Role  

The Programs & Events Intern supports the External Affairs Team on a broad range of initiatives surrounding the planning and implementation of Global Ties U.S. programs & events. This includes but is not limited to events designed for our member organizations, such as our signature annual National Meeting, Diplomacy Begins Here Regional Summits, and National Programmers Workshop, as well as, externally-facing events and partnership campaigns.   

The ideal candidate should possess strong project management skills; be detail-oriented with the ability to multitask and prioritize assignments; and be comfortable using (or learning to use) various project management tools, event planning software, and website content management systems (e.g. WordPress). Through this internship, we hope to support candidates seeking a career in event planning or program management, specifically within the nonprofit or international exchanges field.

Core Responsibilities   

  • Assisting with event registration buildout and management 
  • Writing and editing marketing and program materials (via email blasts, social media posts, website pages, etc.) 
  • Building project planning timelines and action lists 
  • Aiding in the creation and publication of event recaps 
  • Supporting the onsite production of both in-person and virtual events 

Qualifications

  • Enrolled as a student during the internship period 
  • Previous event planning or project management experience is strongly preferred 
  • Strong writing, editing, communication, and organizational skills 
  • Quick learner with the ability to work under minimal supervision 
  • Experience with productivity software (MS Office, Google Drive, etc.), virtual meeting software (e.g. Zoom Webinars), and other event or project management platforms (Basecamp, Cvent, etc.) a plus 
  • Interest in public diplomacy, nonprofit leadership, or international education and exchange preferred 
  • In an effort to strengthen the internship experience, ideal candidates would be able to commit to a full academic year during the Fall and Spring semesters; however, this is not a requirement

Work Environment

  • Summer/Fall Semesters: Open to virtual or hybrid work arrangements. 
  • Spring Semester (National Meeting): Hybrid work arrangement strongly preferred, with the ability to be in-person for the National Meeting. 
  • Occasional need to come into the office outside of traditional in-office days for event-related activities. 
  • Office location: Washington, DC 
  • Global Ties U.S. operate on Windows OS (Windows 10+). Interns must use Windows-compatible devices for both in-office and remote work
