The Challenge
We are looking for an Assistant District Engineer to join our District 1 team.
 
In this role. you will:
    • Coordinate, review, and approve technical plans and drawings relating to driveway permit applications, utility encroachment requests/agreements, subdivision design plans and standards, and process for road additions.
    • Supervise junior employees.
    • Perform field inspections and prepare deficiency letters related to road additions and onsite inspections for compliance to NCDOT specifications for driveway permits, encroachments, and subdivisions.
    • Work closely with our construction staff to administer and manage construction projects.
    • Perform project field inspections, prepare monthly/final pay estimates, create, review, and evaluate supplemental agreements and claims, ensuring compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements, resolve constructability issues, and serve as our NCDOT project representative for formal and informal meetings with contractors, utilities, local officials, media, and the public.
    • Implement NCDOT safety standards and program guidelines to daily activities.
 
What You Bring
    • Computer skills using laptops, iPads, Microsoft Office, SharePoint, HiCams, and drafting software.
    • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve basic engineering problems.
    • Knowledge of engineering standards, policies, and procedures related to transportation.
    • Customer service experience related to solving problems involving explaining complicated engineering concepts to customer groups.
    • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
    •  Communication skills to verbally and in writing communicate in a clear and concise manner.
    • Ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgement.
    • Skills to read and interpret construction plans, provisions, specifications, policies, procedures, and regulations.
    • Able to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions.
    • Fitness to perform moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing.
    • Safety toe shoes.
    • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
Education and Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering; or
    • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Notes
    • You may exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic.
    • You may be required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes.
    • We may require registration as a Professional Engineer by NC Board of Examiners for Engineers & Surveyors.
