Department Summary
The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) is an accredited research and professional school serving approximately 2,200 undergraduates and 100 graduate students both on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the George A. Turnbull Center in Portland, Degrees offered are the BA, BS. MA. MS, and PhD, as well as a minor in Media Studies. The school also supports the interdisciplinary major in Cinema Studies and interdisciplinary minors in multimedia and Native Studies. The SOJC employs approximately 125 individuals as faculty and staff, over 50 graduate employees as well as roughly 50 student employees. The School is one of the oldest journalism programs in the nation, founded in 1916.
Position Summary
The Fiscal Coordinator (FC) reports to, and provides direct financial and budgetary assistance to the Director of Financial Operations (DFO) in the SOJC. This position will also serve as the primary Departmental Grant Administrator (DGA) for SOJC, providing direct pre-award and post-award assistance for PIs. The FC will specifically work directly with members of the Media Center for Science and Technology (MCST) and other PIs throughout SOJC to provide grant assistance through budget creation, EPCS entry, policy Interpretation, effort reporting management, and consultation for compliance with grant requirements This position acts as the primary liaison between SOJC and UO Sponsored Projects Services (SPS).
The Fiscal Coordinator works regularly with SOJC administrative leadership, faculty, PIs, and other staff members for financial and grant-related assistance. The FC maintains grant reporting and tracking systems within the SOJC to analyze and report financial and other technical data to the DFO, staff, and PIs. This position creates and maintains all grant budgets for SOJC. The FC also coordinates directly with the Central Business Service Office (CBSO), shared with the College of Design, for accounts payable, contracting, and travel processes. This position provides training and support as needed for Concur travel questions and processes guest reimbursements as necessary.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree with 24 quarters (16 semester) hours of accounting courses and two years of accounting experience *; OR
• CPA or PA certificate and two years of accounting experience *; OR
• 24 quarters (16 semester) or 240 clock hours of accounting courses and three years of experience *.
*Accounting experience MUST include at least 6 of the following:
— Documenting and resolving problems within an accounting system;
— Classifying revenues and expenditures to funds and accounts;
— Ensuring accounting system conforms with applicable controls;
— Reconciling accounts to general or control ledgers;
— Preparing journal vouchers;
— Applying accounting principles to one or more functional areas; (i.e., AR, AP, etc.)
— Tracing errors through accounting system
— Processing data using a computer;
— Communicating technical material orally and in writing;
— Applying computer report information;
— Knowledge of governmental and fund accounting;
— Applying PC spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.
Professional Competencies
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Advanced knowledge using Microsoft Excel.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a team.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex information effectively to staff with varying levels of knowledge and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience working in a college/university finance/accounting department in a capacity involving responsibility for understanding federal/state financial regulations that impact higher education institutions.
• Advanced policy and/or financial experience with both federal and non-federal grants in both the pre-award and post-award processes.
• Experience working with NIH and NSF grants.
• Experience working in the Banner accounting system.
• Demonstrated experience developing systems and/or processes affecting financial or grant reporting.
• Demonstrated expertise in working with faculty, staff and students or similar constituencies with diverse backgrounds and cultures.
