The Challenge
We are hiring a senior transportation engineer III to be our Division 14 Corridor Development Engineer (CDE) on our team that develops viable strategies to improve transportation across NC.
 
In this role, you will:
    • Serve as a liaison between NCDOT and Metropolitan/Rural Planning Organizations, using your knowledge of NCDOT funding and our needs defined in long-range transportation plans to determine improvements most suitable for submission into our Strategic Transportation Investments (STI) Prioritization system.
    • Participate in complex engineering studies assessing and prioritizing transportation improvements in our long-range transportation plan involving design concept development and traffic engineering analysis to determine the scope of improvements needed, estimated costs, likelihood of securing funding, and preliminary environmental impact analysis.
    • Work with Planning Organizations to determine suitable projects to be submitted for consideration for funding from the various funding sources outside of the STI Prioritization system, such as the newly established Mobility, Economic Development, and Small Construction funds.
 
What You Bring
    • Civil engineering expertise in the principles and practices relating to planning, design, and operation of transportation infrastructure.
    • Experience explaining ideas and concepts to elected officials, citizens, and engineers.
    • Working knowledge of transportation planning activities at the Federal, State, and local levels.
    • Knowledge of NCDOT’s strategic process of prioritizing transportation improvement investment activities.
    • Computer skills in Microsoft Excel and/or ArcGIS, and the ability to attain competency in our SAP financial and project management tools and applications.
Education and Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, and
    • 4+ years of relevant experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Notes
    • Management prefers and we may require you to be registered as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
    • The position has occasional travel to Raleigh and routine travel across NCDOT Division 14 and surrounding areas.
