UKCEH is looking for an experienced Social Scientist to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

Working at UKCEH is rewarding. Our science makes a real difference, enabling people and the environment to prosper, and enriching society. We are the custodians of a wealth of environmental data, collected by UKCEH and its predecessors over the course of more than 60 years.

As a valued member of our team, you’ll get:

  • 27 days annual leave, rising to 29 days after five years
  • 10% employer pension contribution
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity leave
  • 24 hour, 365-day access to support with physical, mental, social, health or financial issues
  • Flexible working opportunities
  • And much more.

An exciting new initiative between UKCEH and Bangor University aims to enhance existing strengths by collaborating and drawing teams together, linking both organisations. ‘Connecting Land, Sea and People’ aims to drive new knowledge generation by working across traditional disciplinary boundaries. To support this, both UKCEH and the University are creating new posts in environmental and social sciences to develop the collaboration. The UKCEH posts are permanent, and these positions will have 50% of their time for the first two years to develop collaborative research, build networks and contribute to the success of the initiative. In the remaining time they will contribute to ongoing projects.

The need to adapt to the impacts of societal and climate change will require whole scale shifts in the way we understand and manage Land-Sea-People interactions. Sociological research is required to develop a deeper understanding of the perceptions, attitudes and behaviours of land managers and the general public, in the context of how to manage environmental challenges, as well as how people understand the benefits provided by the natural environment.

We are looking for an enthusiastic social scientist, to join an inter-disciplinary team of researchers to address major societal challenges relevant to land-sea interactions. The scope of the work will vary, but the main focus is on better understanding the perceptions, motivations and responses of people with respect to positive and negative interactions with the environment. This may include use of qualitative as well as quantitative approaches. You will be supported by a wider team of social and environmental scientists at UKCEH and Bangor University, and part of the role is to actively develop new collaborations across the two organisations.

You’ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Developing social science research within the wider themes in the ‘Connecting Land, Sea and People’ initiative
  • Active collaboration with a broad group of academics from natural and social sciences and other disciplines across UKCEH and Bangor University
  • Contributing social science expertise to existing projects

For the role of Social Scientist, we’re looking for somebody who:

  • Has a PhD or an equivalent qualification/experience in a relevant social or political science discipline
  • Has skills in qualitative and/or quantitative data analysis applied to research
  • Has success in bringing in grant funding
  • Has first-authored peer-reviewed papers
  • Has good knowledge of ethical issues in society and application in a research context
  • Is able to work independently
  • Is able to work flexibly as part of an inter-disciplinary team
  • Has excellent organisational skills
  • Has excellent oral and written communication skills

Ideally, we are also looking for someone with:

  • Experience of social science statistical analysis (e.g. using SPSS or R)
  • Skills in implementing participatory methods – such as stakeholder workshops, key-informant interviews, focus groups or self-completion questionnaires
  • Knowledge of relevant qualitative data analysis software (e.g. NVivo, Atlas.ti)
  • Experience of research across a range of different contexts (e.g. coastal, agricultural or forested landscapes, urban)

If we’ve just described you, we’d love to meet. Apply now.
