The Challenge
We are looking for an entry-level Engineering Technician to be a District Technician on our Johnston County team.
In this role, you will:
    • Work with counties, municipalities, contractors, and field support staff as the permitting technician to establish compliance with applicable engineering standards and guidelines.
    • Review plans for subdivisions, utility installations, and roadway improvements.
    • Process permits, including driveway, utility and non-utility encroachment agreements, road additions and abandonments, and other records and reports.
    • Engage with local government agencies, utility representatives, contractors, property owners, and others to discuss adherence to policies and procedures.
    • Answer questions and address complaints from the public by phone, written correspondence, and in person.
    • Represent NCDOT in contact with the public, other government agencies, and utility companies to inform them of the our plans to respond to complaints/questions and coordinate their activities with NCDOT activities and the contractors.
    • Coordinate work with private developers, contractors, subcontractors, and state staff to promote good relations and expedite performance of the work.
    • Attain NCDOT certifications for asphalt roadway paving, concrete testing, density, Aggregate and Borrow Pit sampling, and other certification as required.
    • Assist contractor’s staff and other technicians in interpreting approved plans and NCDOT standards and specifications.
    • Serve as a liaison between contractors and NCDOT and between NCDOT and the public.
 
What You Bring
    • Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports.
    • You work best in a team environment to complete assignments.
    • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and/or construction surveying.
    • Knowledge of standards and specifications and plan reading experience.
    • Computer skills in Microsoft Office and iPads.
    • Ability to establish and maintain positive communication between technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public.  
    • Good communication skills to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.
    • Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
    • Agility to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing.
    • Strength to lift 50 pounds.
    • You apply a safety philosophy and program to all operations.
 
Education & Experience
    • Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field; or
    • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Management Prefers
    • Candidates with a Class “C” driver’s license.
Note
    • You must be able to work nights and weekends as required to any assigned project within the Division.
