Job Description
CONTROLLER
The Controller manages council accounts and all financial records; prepares and issues financial statements and reports for review by the CFO, CEO and finance committee of the board. They advise and assist the Chief Financial Officer in planning for and managing the financial reporting and accounting systems for the attainment of the organization’s mission and financial objectives.
LOCATION: Assigned Service Center (Any one of our four locations: Asheville, Gastonia, Greensboro or Hickory, NC). Hybrid opportunity available within North Carolina.
Regular travel within Central/Western North Carolina
SALARY: Hiring Range: $55,000 – $60,000 annually
What you will do:
- Oversee Council budget development and monitoring. Lead efforts to ensure that best practices are utilized and that resources are leveraged and deployed in the most effective way to accomplish the Council’s goals.
- Oversee all financial reporting activities, provide accurate and up-to-date information on the financial activities of the Council. Provide analysis of budgets, financial reports, and financial trends
- Lead, support, and develop finance specialist staff for accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and program accounting support.
- Ensure financial operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, federal, and not-for-profit regulations, guidelines, and laws.
- Oversee the day-to-day administration and control of the accounting functions, ensure financial transactions are timely, accurate, and recorded in keeping with accepted accounting standards and principles
- Ensure that Forms 990, 5500, 1099, state sales tax filing, property tax listings and quarterly payroll taxes are filed on a timely basis.
- Prepare and post journal entries to the general ledger.
- Maintain the accuracy of assets
- Responsible for year-end closing and audit preparation
- Participate actively in developing environments that foster diversity, equity, inclusion and access through words, actions and attitude. Ensure work plans are designed to enhance the diversity of our membership.
Who we are looking for:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or closely related field and a minimum of four years of accounting experience is required.
- Experience in nonprofit accounting and fund accounting is strongly preferred.
- Experience with accounting software is required. Experience with Financial Edge and/or Abila is preferred.
- Demonstrated competency in supervision and leading teams is required.
- Ability for sound-decision making, independent judgment and commitment to providing top-notch customer service.
What else do you need:
- Subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement and become and remain a registered member of GSUSA, Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont.
- Knowledge of Girl Scout philosophy, standards, program, and systems are desirable.
- Successfully pass criminal and driver background investigation.
- Valid state-issued driver’s license, valid auto insurance, acceptable driving record and access to a vehicle on a daily basis and willingness and ability to travel throughout the council’s geographic area.
