Job Description
- Load, unload, and transport cargo using a tractor trailer for inventory distribution from our Central Inventory warehouse to our 14 NCDOT divisions located across the state.
- Inspect cargo loads prior to departure for proper balance.
- Deliver loads in a safe and timely manner.
- Assist with preparation and execution of our annual physical inventory count.
- Ensure the security and good condition of the trailer load.
- Prepare and maintain records and reports of transportation operations.
- Plan and select best delivery routes.
- Complete special projects.
- Ensure routine vehicle maintenance to avoid breakdowns and loss of time.
- Experience driving a tractor trailer truck with cargo.
- Skilled and safe experience operating a tractor trailer to transport cargo on lengthy trips in and out of state.
- Knowledge of Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) rules and regulations and defensive driving techniques.
- Strong understanding of safe methods of unloading/loading vehicles to secure proper/even load distribution.
- Demonstrated ability to service and provide minor maintenance to vehicles and auxiliary equipment.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL).
- Ability to prepare/maintain records/reports of transportation operations.
- Ability to understanding and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Considerable knowledge of vehicle/equipment used in daily tasks.
- Working knowledge of applicable traffic laws and other established regulatory requirements.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and decision-making.
- Thorough knowledge of established safety and health policies.
- Thorough knowledge of equipment capability and limitations.
- Work requires turning the steering wheel; changing the gears; and depressing the clutch, gas, and brake pedals with considerable effort.
- Strength to lift medium to heavy weight cargo.
- You will be loading and unloading the vehicle in all types of weather conditions, be frequently exposed to hazardous weather/traffic conditions, and be exposed to noise pollution.
- You must possess the necessary licenses/certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment.
- High School/GED diploma; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
