Full-Time Preschool Assistant to the Director
Job Description
Congregation B’nai Shalom, a 300-family Conservative synagogue in Walnut Creek, California, offers an innovative approach to Judaism that remains deeply rooted in tradition. We seek a permanent Preschool Assistant to the Director starting in summer 2022, committed to leading and assisting the Director in developing the early childhood education program and staff to help children grow academically, cognitively, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. Under the supervision of the Director of the Gan Shalom Preschool Director, the Preschool Assistant to the Director will be responsible for assisting the Director in the daily operations including regular school year, summer session, and winter session. The Preschool Assistant to the Director will also have primary planning and oversight responsibility for Synagogue Preschool family events; Jewish holiday family programs; Shabbat programs and other programs developed to introduce and enhance the Jewish experience of our families.
Specific Duties of the Preschool Assistant to the Director
Leadership
- Maintain a visible and accessible presence in the Preschool for students, staff, and parents
- Assist Director in ensuring compliance with California Community Care licensing requirements and other applicable regulations
- Assist the Director in creating, monitoring, and adhering to an annual budget as approved by the congregation
- As determined by the Director, perform tasks necessary to operate the program safely and developmentally appropriate
- Assist the Director and curriculum specialists in curriculum development
- Research grant opportunities for the Preschool
- Coordinate teacher training and staff professional development activities
- Provide relief to teachers in classrooms as needed
Administration
- Maintain attendance records and student files and performance records
- Maintain Preschool staff personnel and licensing records
- Update and maintain records of completion of staff development participation as required by the State of California, Contra Costa County, and/or Gan Shalom Preschool
- Prepare and update allergy and medical conditions list for students’ safety
- Maintain Brightwheel (school communication and record keeping system) for all students
- Update ShulCloud information (synagogue database management system) for Preschool families
Communication
- Create and/or proofread and edit all regular and special communications from the Preschool staff
- Sustain ongoing communication with parents through Constant Contact e-mail blasts, Facebook postings, and Brightwheel
- Distribute flyers, internet posts, and other promotional material, as appropriate, for special programs in the preschool with the Director’s approval
Programming
- Create and maintain systems for regular orders and accounting of weekly pizza and challah and other similar projects
- Collaborate with the Preschool Director, Religious School Administrative staff, and synagogue staff on creating and implementing regular fundraisers
- Assist in the planning and presentation of special synagogue and regional events, including the Purim Carnival and Israel Live celebrations
Desired Attributes
- Associate degree in early childhood education or related field; or bachelor’s degree with coursework in early childhood education or related field; or relevant experience
- Early Childhood Education credits; certifications are a bonus
- Prior experience working in a childcare setting
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
- Must be able to pass a background check in compliance with California regulations
- Intermediate skill in Microsoft Word; basic skill in Excel
- Familiarity with desktop design in Microsoft Publisher, Canva, or other similar software; graphic design is a bonus
- Business or creative writing skill
- Social media content creation experience
- Familiarity with local and state licensing requirements is a bonus
Compensation
The Assistant to the Director is a fulltime position. Daily schedule Monday-Friday can be flexible. Compensation range is $35,000-$50,000 depending on skills and experience.
Compensation includes two weeks paid vacation, contribution to healthcare reimbursement account, discounted fees for Preschool, Religious school, and other synagogue activities, and opportunities for continuing education and career growth.
