The Challenge​​​​​​​
We are looking for a senior driller to join our Geotechnical team in our Cabarrus County office.
 
In this role you will lead a 2-man team performing drilling operations collecting geotechnical data for the design, construction, and/or maintenance of future and existing roadways/structures.
The team performs in situ tests using accepted drilling methods, including
      • Standard Penetration Tests
      • Vane Shear tests
      • Collection of undisturbed samples
      • Installation of inclinometer and piezometer wells
Typical drilling methods used are solid and hollow stem augers, mud rotary, rock coring, and wash boring. Hand auguring, rod sounding and push probing may be used when utilizing a drill rig is not feasible or necessary.
In this role you will:
    • Mobilize drilling, testing, and sampling equipment.
    • Operate semitrucks and trailers to transport equipment to job sites. We maintain a fleet of truck-mounted drills, ATV and track mounted drills, skid-mounted drills, and barges.
    • Equip drills with the necessary drilling steel and tooling, and other testing equipment required for the job.
    • Perform daily routine maintenance of drilling/testing equipment.
    • Coordinate maintenance and repairs with the NCDOT equipment shop.
    • Instruct lower-level technicians in the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all equipment.
    • Ensure that all operations are safe and bring concerns to the supervising Geologist or Engineer.
What You Bring
    • Drilling experience to perform geotechnical subsurface investigations, operate exploratory drilling machines or similar heavy equipment, maintain power equipment and hand tools, and elevate surveys using an automatic level.
    • Experience performing normal drilling procedures such as auger drilling, mud drilling, wash boring, rock coring, hand auguring, rod sounding and probing, demonstrated ability to identify the best method for penetrating subsurface materials to accomplish the needs of the supervising Geologist or Engineer, and skills to communicate subsurface changes between tests from drill reaction.
    • Thorough expertise and understanding of drilling concepts, practices, and theories.
    • Skilled experience safely operating and maintaining a chainsaw and power tools.
    • Communication skills to describe work to be performed to property owners, obtain water well information, and describe location of work to underground utility locating services.
    • Strength to occasionally exert up to 100 pounds of force, frequently exert up to 50 pounds of force, and constantly exert 10 pounds of force to move objects.
    • Ability to serve as a technical expert while independently accomplishing assigned tasks.
    • Thorough knowledge of state/federal rules and regulations related to drilling to ensure compliance and provide guidance/interpretation.
    • Thorough knowledge and skill in the use of drilling equipment and related software.
    • Ability to independently conduct complex inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standards/codes, and specifications.
    • Skills to perform the most complex technical work in a specific materials area or perform a wide range of sampling, testing, and inspection duties to determine adherence to codes/standards.
    • Good ability to exercise a wide range of decision-making and judgment.
    • Solid verbal and non-verbal skills to express complex technical and/or program concepts and related facts in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.
    • Agile communication skills to modify delivery, language, or material to account for needs of different audiences.
    • Willingness to serve as lead or resource.
    • Ability to maintain detailed records.
    • Skills to analyze findings and recommend corrective actions.
Notes
    • A pre-employment drug test is required.
    • Frequent overnight travel may be required.
Management Prefers
    • Candidates with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
 
Education & Experience
    • Associate’s degree, and
    • 3+ years of progressive drilling experience, or
    •       
    • High School/GED diploma, and
    • 5+ years of progressive drilling experience, or
    •       
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
