Job Description
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds which may include and are not limited to Black, Indigenous, People of Color, including underrepresented groups and new immigrant populations, people with both visible and invisible disabilities, Women, people of various gender and sexual identities and expressions, First-generation students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and individuals who might encounter barriers based on their religious expression, age, national origin, ethnicity, or veteran status.
- BA or BS in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or Business or a combination of equivalent education and experience to equal four years
- Proven impact writing and storytelling skills
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills
- Exceptional proofreading, editing and rewriting abilities
- Demonstrated/documented project management experience, managing multiple projects
- Exceptional organizational skills
- Experience in a communications-related field, including use of digital media
- Have fun.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong creative skills
- At least two years of after-college experience in a communications-related field, including use of digital media
- Have two consecutive years managing non-personal social media profiles within the past three years
- Experience working multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to work independently, as well as with a team
- Experience as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment
- Experience working with a diverse population
- Familiarity with AP Style
- Familiarity with Basecamp
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite
- Experience working with print and marketing services vendors

General Statement of Responsibilities:
Boynton Health at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities seeks a Communications Specialist with strong creative writing and project management skills. This position plays an important role in supporting Boynton’s mission to foster a healthy campus environment, including a commitment to respect for diversity, equity and inclusion. The Communications Specialist is part of a marketing and communications team that includes a Senior Graphic Designer, Creative Multimedia Manager and Communications and Marketing Director.
Median Salary: $40,200.00
Detailed Job Responsibilities:
Writing, Editing and Social Media – 45%:
- Lead the creation of authentic, content-rich, and multimedia storytelling—including that which is grounded in perspectives and experiences of communities historically underserved and marginalized, as well as explaining the work of Boynton Health, and University of Minnesota.
- Manage Boynton Health’s social media platforms, including secondary accounts
- Develop and execute social media campaigns to boost awareness of Boynton Health, its eleven clins and one pharmacy, health promotions, and all locations on the Twin Cities campus
- Draft organizational statements, emails, and publications advancing Boynton Health’s point of view using the brand’s voice and tone
- Support development of materials, including analytic data summaries, quarterly and annual reports
- Ensure alignment and usage of Boynton Health’s brand guidelines and messaging across external communications
- Contribute written communications and writing support for internal Boynton Health clients
- Write original copy and rewrite and edit existing material print materials like postcards and posters, letters, and brochures; contribute writing for digital communications including web, emails, digital displays and social media
- Ensure materials conform to professional standards, meet Boynton Health style guidelines and adhere to University of Minnesota guidelines
- Work with the Senior Graphic Designer on layout and copy fitting and with Creative Multimedia Manager on updating web copy
- Communicate design needs to marketing team for ads, brochures, signs, displays and other materials
Project Management and Vendor Management – 35%:
- Coordinate marketing needs with internal Boynton Health clients and the marketing team
- Serve as initial contact and point person for marketing requests and projects
- Assist clients with defining objectives, providing plans to support those objectives and coordinate implementation of plans between clients and the marketing team
- Create and oversee timelines and calendars of assigned projects
- Develop marketing plans with detailed timelines, task descriptions and objectives
- Coordinate and negotiate with University and external vendors to produce and distribute marketing materials
- Responsible for supporting and collaborating with the Creative Multimedia Manager and Senior Graphic Designer
- Support the promotion and marketing of Boynton Health clinics, student health programs, public health initiatives and other tasks in a manner that supports the overall mission and values that reflect a positive and inclusive campus climate for all by advancing equity and diversity
Event Support – 10%:
- Develop outreach plans to support attendance at Boynton-sponsored events
- Assist with logistics of event planning and implementation, often in collaboration with the public health office manager
- Serve as the spokesperson for Boynton Health for orientation, tabling and other events
Other – 10%:
- Administrative support duties as assigned
