Summary of Duties
The Consulate General of Canada in New York is seeking to hire a Program Assistant in the Immigration section. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the future of Canada. We are seeking a hard-working, collaborative and results-oriented person, with strong attention to detail and a commitment to client service. This person will support the delivery of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC’s) Programs through:
- assisting Migration Officers in promotion, recruitment and liaison activities;
- applying knowledge of established guidelines and procedures;
- organizing work, tracking resources, and resolving difficult issues;
- screening and reviewing documentation on a variety of types of applications and files, including complex cases;
- supporting program integrity;
- developing and sending correspondence; and
- providing a source of knowledgeable information and assistance to officers, clients, and stakeholders, both internal and external.
Area of Selection
Open to applicants who are legal residents or citizens of the United States who are:
- living in the tri-state area of New York;
- current employees of a Canadian Mission located in the United States;
- spouses and dependents of Canada-based staff of CNGNY and PRMNY;

Essential Qualifications
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language. Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.
Education
Completion of a post-secondary education credential of at least three years; or an acceptable combination of experience, education and training.
Language
Fluency in English (oral and written)
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of recent* corporate or government experience within a team environment providing services to the general public/clients in an administrative support or program assistant capacity.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook.
*Recent experience is defined as within the last 5 years.
Rated Requirements
The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed. Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral in-person, remote or recorded interview, a role-play, practical tests, a presentation and/or psychometric assessment.

- Experience providing services to and working with a diverse client base;
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook and general computer skills; and
- Experience using on-line information management systems

Operational Requirements
Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with the Locally Engaged Staff (LES) regulations of 37.50 hours per week. Occasional overtime, including evenings and weekends, may be required with advance notice.
Conditions of Employment
- Eligibility for a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal and credit background check; and
- Independent work authorization in the United States and status in accordance with United States protocol directives for foreign missions. In this respect, applicants must confirm independent work authorization in the United States (e.g. US Citizen, U.S Legal Permanent Resident (LPR), or specific visa categories (e.g. dependents of Diplomatic and Official Visas holders)) as required by the Department of State for employment in a foreign mission.
