Full-Time Vetting Associate
Job Description
GlobalGiving is looking for a Vetting Associate to join our team. GlobalGiving performs due diligence on every applicant to the GlobalGiving community to understand the work they do, ensure compliance with the United States IRS and international grantmaking guidelines, and to advise on if and how to partner with the applicant.
You will join a team that has almost a decade of experience working with applicants (nonprofits, for-profits, and individuals) worldwide. We combine global grantmaking expertise with technical know-how and the ongoing adoption of the best practices in international philanthropy. We are instrumental in helping GlobalGiving build a community of changemakers in a way that balances risk, trust, and impact.
You will be responsible for delivering GlobalGiving’s vetting programs as part of a collaborative team: this involves assessing applicants (nonprofit organizations) for GlobalGiving’s partner-programs and collaborating with cross-functional teams to answer partner questions and advise on what we find in the review. You will work directly with applicants as the primary point of contact through the due diligence process, and support your Vetting teammates on assessments that require complex or special handling.
The Vetting Associate will not only do vetting but will also have the opportunity to shape how vetting is done. The Associate will work closely with the Program Team to continuously improve the design and delivery of GlobalGiving’s flagship program – the GlobalGiving Accelerator – including identifying and attracting the ‘right’ applicants and thinking about how to streamline or right-size the due diligence process to improve both the applicant and reviewer experience.
You might be a good fit if:
- You see complexity and nuance as challenging rather than frustrating.
- You love bringing clarity to ambiguous situations.
- You are practical about risk: you don’t default to “worst-case scenario” assessments and are comfortable considering risks in terms of likelihood.
We have a casual work atmosphere where everyone’s input and ideas are valued. We’re committed to work-life balance and offer everyone opportunities to learn, experiment, and grow. Since creative, enthusiastic employees are our most valued resource and the basis for our success, we take great care in how we attract, hire, and support our employees for a successful career. If you care about collaboration, curiosity, communication excellence, and continuous improvement, this position is right for you.
Primary Responsibilities
- Due diligence review: Conduct due diligence on applicants from around the world to ensure compliance with GlobalGiving vetting and grantmaking policies and procedures. You will learn how to work with applicants to obtain information, research charitable laws and regulations, and assess and analyze risk in a way that respects the applicant’s context.
- Vetting communications and advisory: Communicate your analysis clearly (written and verbally) so our partners and grants managers can make informed decisions on working with an applicant. You will learn how to tailor the same analysis to different audiences eg. reframing a review decision in the form of advice to a corporate partner or advising a GlobalGiving grants manager on what you found in a review.
- Make things better: Identify and implement improvements to GlobalGiving’s due diligence process and workflow. Help us make the due diligence process clearer, fairer, and easier for applicants, reviewers, and other stakeholders in the vetting process.
- Support GlobalGiving partner lifecycle: Collaborate with the Program Team to improve the application and due diligence experience for nonprofits applying to the GlobalGiving Accelerator. The Accelerator is the gateway to GlobalGiving for most of our nonprofit partners – and the due diligence application is the entry to that gateway. Let’s make sure their first impression of GlobalGiving is the best one possible.
- Knowledge management: Maintain and build out the Vetting Team’s knowledge. Help the Vetting team keep our in-house knowledge bank of nonprofit laws, review policies, and guidance up-to-date.
- Motivated Self: Superb self-management skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while bringing your own sense of humor and the spirit of service and collaboration.
Required Qualifications
For our team to be a great fit for you, the following qualifications should resonate with you:
- Experience in grantmaking/ funding, risk management, nonprofit compliance, or a position with transferable skills. We are open to applicants with varying levels of experience; we don’t expect you to have any familiarity with doing vetting or due diligence (you will receive training).
- You are an excellent communicator, particularly at succinct writing. You will need to produce and manage a large volume of writing (such as reviews and responding to emails from applicants and corporate partners). You may need to explain complex application issues simply and clearly, often to applicants for whom English is a Second Language. You will need tact and diplomacy to communicate sensitive issues to corporate partners and applicants.
- You have great judgment and can identify a signal from noise. You can differentiate between information that is more or less relevant and/or important, a crucial skill in doing due diligence.
- You have strong skills in self-organization, prioritization, and setting realistic expectations for yourself. Due diligence review can feel like a high-pressure situation, such as if there are unexpected increases in application submission numbers and short turnaround times, especially when combined with other projects. We value staff who can clearly and honestly communicate their capacity: help us help you manage your workload.
- You have attention to detail and an aptitude for understanding and working with complexity. Our vetting approach does not believe in applying blunt rules to nuanced situations. You will be working with workflows and processes where the details matter and have changed/ are changing over time.
- You are comfortable with some amount of repetition in your work; you are excited to contribute to GlobalGiving’s mission even if the work is indirect or not glamorous.
- You are not intimidated by working with computers, online systems, or digital platforms. Our work is done entirely online and we use several different systems to do our job. You will sometimes need to help applicants and corporate partners navigate the application and due diligence systems which are part of GlobalGiving’s own site, built and maintained by an in-house development team.
- You are committed to learning from experience; seeking, incorporating, and sharing information; taking ownership of work; and proactively seeking ways to help the Vetting Team and GlobalGiving meet its goals.
- A passionate belief in the mission of GlobalGiving and a commitment to our core values.
