Part-Time Farm2Family Program Instructor

Job Description

Job summary: This part-time position will be responsible for the following:

● Help to develop and run THP’s pilot Farm2Family food distribution program for families of students in our Intensive Garden Program.

● Organize and distribute weekly food deliveries and educational materials aligned with existing THP lessons.

● Collect and enter evaluation and tracking data for grant reporting.

● Support partnership building and community outreach with the Spanish-speaking community of the San Mateo County coast.

● Work with other THP Farm Educators to lead or co-lead farm field trips, camps and LiveStreamed lessons throughout the year.

● High proficiency to communicate and provide instruction in both English and Spanish is required.

 

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

● Perform community outreach including surveys, phone calls, presentations, and interviews.

● Deliver nutrition education and agricultural instruction following THP curriculum, obtain and prepare materials, and foster a pleasant and safe learning environment for students and program participants.

● Lead students in seasonal cooking activities.

● Lead students in farming and gardening activities including planting, weeding, harvesting and composting.

● Participate in regular THP staff meetings, reporting, and as needed training.

● Work with THP Farm Educators to maintain the outdoor kitchen and classroom areas as sanitary and functional educational spaces.

● Conduct other duties as assigned by the Programs Manager.

 

Preferred experience and qualities:

● Experience leading children, youth and adults in an outdoor setting, understanding of farming and/or gardening and the ability to communicate these concepts in a fun and engaging way to diverse age groups.

● Classroom management/group management skills.

● Preference to candidates living in the community served—Half Moon Bay and surrounding communities of the San Mateo County coast.

● Adept at Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, or similar.

● Comfort and confidence working independently.

● Creativity, flexibility, and willingness to learn.

 

Additionally, the Program Instructor will:

● Maintain responsible behavior; work both independently and as part of a team; comply with organizational tenets as outlined in The HEAL Project Employee handbook.

● Utilize own vehicle to get to different sites; provide proof of CA drivers license & insurance. Travel reimbursement will be provided.

● Perform physical tasks related to garden maintenance; able to lift 40 lbs.

● Submit to fingerprinting & DOJ background check to work with children.

Start date: April 19, 2021

Supervises: Students, interns and volunteers

Position type: Hourly non-exempt position. Semi-regular schedule, approximately 15-20 hours/week, year round.

Reports to the Program Manager.

Compensation: $19-$21/hr DOE
