Work at CBC/Radio-Canada

At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance.

Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.

Your role

CBC British Columbia is looking for a dynamic Host/Producer for North by Northwest, the province’s number one rated weekend morning radio show. This is a permanent full-time position.

We are looking for an engaging and smart journalist who can program CBC B.C.’s weekend mornings on CBC Listen and CBC Radio One. As host-producer you connect our community. You generate program ideas, book guests, write scripts, edit audio and technically take the show to air. You are a companion for the audience and engage with them regularly on air, online and in person, in the community.  You also have great range, understanding that weekend listeners are in a different space and you must know how to reflect that in both content and tone.

You are passionate about British Columbia, have knowledge of the different regions of the province and are committed to putting a spotlight on people and stories with a wide range of perspectives from across the province.

You have an interest in the music scene in British Columbia and a feel for the kind of music people want to hear when they are easing into their weekend morning routine. You are plugged into the arts and the creative community and have a strong desire to give listeners the knowledge, insight and confidence to understand cultural and current events.

You are a well-read, strong writer with an eclectic range of interests in topics both B.C. and beyond —  from social issues to politics to how the economy affects lives. From history to pop culture, climate change and everything in between. As an interviewer, you are an active listener who seeks clarity and understanding, anticipating what the audience needs and wants to know.

You have an ability to be a leader in upholding and demonstrating the highest of CBC’s journalistic standards and practices on the program.

It’s imperative that you are a self starter, able to work independently on the show you host and produce, while also able to forge strong relationships with other programs and staff. You collaborate with our newsroom to bring the show’s content to all our platforms. You are familiar with digital storytelling and you fully embrace social and digital media.

You bring your own, unique experiences and perspectives to the team. You are curious about different cultures and communities and open to a range of ideas and opinions.

You understand that using a full range of tones, including humour, is key to strong current affairs programming. You are enthusiastic about experimenting with talk formats, including taking risks with innovative treatments of topics. And you don’t take yourself too seriously!

You are comfortable going on the air live at any time, reacting to breaking news and changing events, updating and remaking the program as needed.

You are a natural storyteller with a proven ability to discover and bring to life — in the field and in the studio —  the people and issues that reflect British Columbia today.

You will play a key role in helping us connect with, and grow, new audiences through the range of stories and perspectives presented on the program, as well as through regular outreach and public events across British Columbia.

Key Tasks:

  • Work to ensure the program mandate is always reflected in the show.
