Our current Vice President, Finance and Administration/Chief Financial Officer is retiring.  Therefore, we are beginning our search to fill this leadership role.  We are looking for an experienced leader that meets the below education and experience requirements.  Additionally, the ideal candidate will have the ability to support people and operations, be open to learning new things, forward-thinking and progressive, and a visionary with a proven track record of successful strategy execution.

Friendship Place is nonprofit organization, serving the Washington, DC region, empowering individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness to rebuild their lives with the involvement of the community.  Friendship Place offers the most effective model for addressing homelessness, with innovative, customized programs that have positive, demonstrable results and a lasting impact on the community and beyond.  Our programs are person-centric and individualized to meet the needs and goals of individuals, families, youth/young adults and Veterans experiencing homelessness.  We provide outreach, hospitality, health care, case management, housing, job placement services, and advocacy.  We have established a national presence and are known for sharing best practices in the field.

Summary

The Vice President, Finance and Administration/Chief Financial Officer directs the financial, day-to-day operations and administrative affairs of the organization and prepares financial analyses of operations, including interim financial statements with supporting schedules, for the guidance of the President and Board of Directors.  The position is responsible for the organization’s financial plans and policies, its accounting practices, the conduct of its relationship with lending institutions and the financial community, the maintenance of fiscal records, the preparation of financial reports, and information technology (IT) planning and policies.

The Vice President, Finance and Administration/Chief Financial Officer is an officer of the Corporation and is appointed by the President.

Requirements

Responsibilities

Finance

  • Development, analysis and interpretation of statistical and accounting information in order to appraise operating results in terms of performance against budget, cash flow and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of the organization.
  • Oversees the financial operations of the organization as Chief Financial Officer, responsible for accounting, budgeting, payroll, audit, reporting finances to the Board.
  • Maintains the organization’s system of accounts and keeps books and records on all organizational transactions and assets.
  • Establishes major financial objectives and policies for the organization and prepares reports that outline the organization’s financial position in the areas of income, expenses and net earnings and makes projections based on past, present, and future operations.
  • Coordinates and directs the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts, institutes and maintains other planning and control functions and provides reports and recommendations to the Finance Committee, the Executive Committee, and the Board.
  • Responsible for tax planning and compliance with all Federal, State and Local payroll and other applicable taxes.
  • Determines depreciation rates to apply to capitalized items and advises management on desirable operational adjustments due to tax revisions.
  • Evaluates and recommends insurance coverage for protection against property losses and potential liabilities.
  • Serves as the organization’s liaison with outside auditors.
  • Ensures the organizations compliance with Federal, State and Local licensing agencies.
  • Ensures the organizations compliance with requirements for the administration of funds from restricted grants.

Administration

  • Supports the President in planning and managing the operations of Friendship Place.
  • Responsible for property management  of real estate owned by organization.
  • Directs the planning and policies for meeting the organization’s IT requirements.  Responsible for the maintenance of the organization’s IT networks, hardware and software.
  • Responsible for organization administration, including insurance and risk management, information  services, and facilities. Ensures  that FP technology and IT infrastructure are kept current and support the operations of the organization.
  • Provides consultation to human resources regarding compensations and benefits.
  • Responsible for supervising and  evaluating the performance of personnel in the Administration Department.  This individual recommends training requirements, has the duty to keep the staff at the highest level of skill necessary to meet the organizations needs and objectives, and may recommend to the President and Board of Directors that personnel be hired or removed from those departments.
  • Implements strategic plan and develops measures to evaluate progress. Works with program directors to monitor progress toward objectives and budget performance.  Works with President to develop measures to evaluate fundraising efforts.
  • Represents the organization at meetings with government funders.

Education & Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) and ten (10) or more years of senior level experience leading an organization’s finance, accounting, payroll, and administrative functions.
  • Non-profit work experience with a track record of growth.
  • Knowledge of Federal contracts and Human Services.
  • Experience providing oversight for an annual budget of $15 million or more.
  • Experience leading a department with three or more employees.
  • Experience providing oversight for infrastructure and operations.
  • Experience working in an accredited organization is preferred.
  • Highly proficient computer and technology skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Solutions-oriented and proactive service attitude.
  • Exceptional project management, organization, and planning skills, with demonstrated success producing high-quality deliverables on time and within budget.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Excellent strategic thinking and analytic skills, with the ability to operationalize concepts and transform ideas into action as well as apply research findings to ongoing development.
  • Possess the ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with professional contacts, resources and/or networks and relate to people with sensitivity, tact, discretion and professionalism.
  • Ability to synthesize complex information into audience appropriate visuals, reports, and presentations.
  • Proven leadership ability, innovative disposition and collaborative approach to identifying problems and finding solutions.
  • Excellent people and collaboration skills.
  • Understanding of change management techniques and ability to support staff in various stages of change.
  • Exhibits a high level of emotional intelligence.
  • Experience interfacing and working with a Board of Directors.

Walking, reaching, bending, lifting, fine hand coordination, extensive sitting, ability to read and write in English, and ability to communicate with all stakeholders.

Other Details

  • Compensation: Depending on overall qualifications, the hiring pay range is between $135,000.00 – $145,000.00 annually.
