The Nature Conservancy in Ohio is seeking a Sustainable Forestry Director. The Sustainable Forestry Director develops, manages, and advances forest health, sustainable forestry, and carbon projects in Ohio. They will engage large scale partnerships with corporations and private forest owners across the state to more sustainably manage and protect Ohio‘s forests. The Director also oversees teams that manage and steward Nature Conservancy preserves in Southern and Northeast Ohio, including the 20,000-acre Edge of Appalachia Preserve, the 2,000 acre Morgan Swamp Preserve, and ten additional TNC preserves ranging from 10-650 acres in size. They serve as the principle contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and the academic community to advance and expand the conservation and sustainable management of Ohio forests.
Minimum Qualifications
- BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in forestry management.
- Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
- Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, private property owners, community groups and/or government agencies.
- Experience developing and managing timber harvest and operations in eastern hardwood ecosystems to meet conservation, restoration, or stand management objectives.
- Certified Forester or ability to obtain Certification within 12 months under Society of American Foresters (SAF) standards
- Experience managing multiple complex projects under deadlines and within budget, including: consulting forest contracts, logging and road-building contracts, and/or restoration projects.
- Communication and negotiation experience working successfully in difficult and sometimes stressful situations with contractors, rural community members and stakeholders, and partners.
- Experience in forest management planning and forestland valuation.
- Experience using GIS, field data loggers, and common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers
- Experience with forest and carbon inventory using common forest mensuration techniques and methods.
Preferred Qualifications
- Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Experience with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification Principles and Criteria.
- Experience developing and/or managing California Air Resources Board carbon projects.
- Politically savvy and experienced in partnership development (partners, rural communities, government).
- Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans.
- Direct knowledge of current trends and practices in Appalachian forest conservation, restoration, and forest health/fire management.
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- Demonstrated experience in fundraising.
