As a member of the Legal Team, the Counsel/Senior Counsel Joint Ventures and Litigation will report to the Assistant General Counsel, Corporate & Commercial with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Associate General Counsel, Regulatory, Litigation & Environmental. This role will assist with managing NOVA Chemical’s risk by providing leadership and advocacy on joint ventures and litigation matters. Working with internal stakeholders in various functional areas, key shared accountabilities will include:
- Assisting with joint venture strategy, including relationship management and communications
- Assisting with litigation, arbitration, dispute resolution, and legal settlements
- Assisting with litigation strategy, including related communication strategy
You Will Use Your Expertise To:
- Support the Associate General Counsel, Regulatory, Litigation & Environmental on the litigation and joint venture matters.
- Provide counsel regarding procedure, timelines, potential outcomes, legal obligations, risks, and potential violations for litigation and joint ventures and escalates as required.
- Identifiy and manage relationships with external legal counsel for litigation and joint venture matters.
- Provide input into and execute NOVA Chemicals’ litigation and joint venture strategy.
- Drive new approaches and continuous improvement using your growth mindset.
- Participate in the preparation of the budget for the litigation and joint venture legal function.
- Oversees legal reviews by understanding the business drivers, clarifying complex technical issues, and ensuring a successful collaboration with internal and external parties.
- Leverages technical expertise and analytical skills to manage complex legal issues.
- Drives decisions involving complex legal issues with the potential of having a significant financial impact on NOVA Chemicals, often under time sensitive conditions.
- Provides general advice on legal matters.
What We Are Looking For:
The successful candidate will have a Juris Doctor or equivalent from an accredited Canadian University with a minimum of 10-15 years of relevant primary experience in joint ventures with secondary experience in complex, contentious commercial litigation. A degree from an accredited university in Finance, an MBA or CFA designation is an asset.
- Current membership (in good standing) with a bar association in Canada with a preference shown for licensing in Alberta or a willingness to become licensed in Alberta.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve complex and sometimes contentious commercial matters skillfully and with NOVA Chemicals’ best interest in mind.
- Knowledge of the laws and regulations of the jurisdictions in which NOVA Chemicals operates.
- A proven team player able to work on diverse, multi-disciplinary teams who is willing to help others, regardless of the task to achieve a common goal.
- Willingness to respectfully challenge other’s viewpoints and accepting of having their own viewpoint challenged by others.
- Effective negotiation, interpersonal, conflict resolution and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Strong business acumen and a commercial mindset.
- Ability to communicate complex legal, technical and/or business information to various audiences.
