Temporary Seasonal Park Ranger
Job Description
- Perform foot and vehicle patrols to enforce Rules and Regulations in parks, trails, and open space properties of unincorporated Adams County.
- Prioritizes visitor safety and provides public education in areas of responsibility.
- Enforces Parks Rules and Regulations by contacting violators, takes corrective action through the issuance of verbal/written warnings, and citations as warranted.
- Conducts investigations upon observation, or reports of, unlawful or unusual occurrences; resolves visitor complaints, closure monitoring, dumping/encroachment mitigation, agricultural land patrol, and interaction with vulnerable populations (persons experiencing unsheltered homelessness).
- Prepares and maintains records and reports.
- Takes written statements and records relevant information, as necessary.
- May be required to provide testimony in court regarding investigations and/or citations
- Provides information and direction to the visiting public.
- Manages and enforces the recreational activities allowed at the bodies of waters within areas of responsibility to include boating, fishing, and enforcement of prohibited activities.
- Responds to and provides aid/assistance in capacity as a first responder during emergencies/crisis occurring within Adams County.
- Performs rescue operations as trained to include medical emergencies, search and rescue, boating/water rescue, wildfire, floods, and other natural disasters.
- Perform basic maintenance operations including trash removal, fence and sign maintenance as needed.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications for Success
- Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary safety precautions enough to be able to establish a safe environment for self and others.
- Ability to be certified in the deployment and proper use of oleoresin capsicum (O.C.) spray, and expandable baton.
- Ability to learn and maintain CPR and first aid techniques sufficient to be able to perform lifesaving measures and render first aid when needed.
- Computer skills: Learn the operation of computer and County-supported software, to include MS Office Suite, E-Docs and other software.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. This may include working with vulnerable populations (persons experiencing homelessness).
- Ability to remain motivated, dynamic, and engage in problem-solving throughout the day.
- Learn, interpret, and apply State and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
- Learn court procedure, including, but not limited to, citation issuance and court documents.
- Enforce necessary regulations with firmness and tact, always maintaining excellent customer service.
- Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Use all required safety equipment.
- Possess a proactive, self-motivated work ethic while maintaining the highest degree of integrity and trust.
- Safely operate a county vehicle assigned to the Park Ranger Service on public highways and county trails.
More Qualifications for Success
- Education and Training:
- Preference may be given to applicants that have or are working toward a degree in Natural Resource Management, Outdoor/Environmental Recreation, Biology, Criminal Justice, or similar.
- Experience:
- Must be able to work various shifts, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
- Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred.
- Knowledge of local flora and fauna. Experience working with wildlife preferred.
- Awareness of current events and management issues in Adams County and municipal jurisdictions’ parks, trails, and open space properties.
- Experience with vulnerable populations (homeless and at-risk individuals), emergency medical care, and de-escalation training/experience is preferred.
- Experience in environmental education and youth programming is preferred.
- One year (or season) of experience in park management, park law enforcement, or traditional law enforcement is preferred.
- License or Certificate:
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
- Must have or be able to attain valid current First Aid and CPR certifications.
- Motorcycle endorsement as well as ability to ride a mountain bike preferred.
- Possession of CPR and first aid certification within 3 months of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
- Impact Weapon/Expandable Baton *Certification within six months of employment.
- Hand-held aerosol chemical agent (oleoresin capsicum) *Certification within six months of employment.
- Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
