YOUR POSITION WITH TNC

The Nature Conservancy (TNC), working within our Global Conservation in Partnership with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLC) strategy, envisions a world where Indigenous Peoples and local communities are managing lands and waters in ways that improve people’s lives and drive conservation outcomes through strengthened voice, choice, and action. Today, we are working in partnership with IPLCs on conservation goals across 24 countries. The IPLC Rights and Equity Program Associate supports the Global IPLC Team on the integration of gender, intergenerational, and other equity considerations into our conservation work and supports efforts to ensure TNC staff and programs are implementing a human rights-based approach to conservation. They provide logistical, administrative, technical, and strategic assistance to ensure successful program outcomes. This position sits within the Global Protect Oceans, Lands and Waters business unit. The location for this position is flexible within countries where The Nature Conservancy is a registered NGO and has an already established office. This position is not eligible for relocation or immigration assistance. This position may require travel (both domestic and international) up to 15%.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The IPLC Rights and Equity Program Associate organizes, provides logistics, and helps facilitate trainings, workshops, webinars, communities of practice, and other vehicles to build capacity across the organization on issues of equity and rights in conservation, with a focus on gender equity, intergenerational equity, and human rights. They research and develop topical expertise on key issues, including, but not limited to gender equity, youth engagement, intersections of conservation with health and well-being, social cohesion, women, youth, and minority led livelihoods, human rights, Indigenous knowledge systems, decolonized and culturally responsive approaches, etc. They assess and drive opportunities to improve conservation strategy design and implementation with these issues in mind. They strengthen communities of practice and networks of practitioners around the world. They are in service of our field practitioners with a focus on delivering tools and expertise to help those teams effectively achieve their objectives. They provide capacity to the Global IPLC Team as needed on logistical, administrative, and coordination functions.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Organizes and provides logistics and helps facilitate capacity building efforts related to IPLC equity and rights in conservation.
  • Researches and develops topical expertise on key issues related to conservation in partnership with IPLCs.
  • Produces factsheets, training materials, communications materials, and other tools to build organizational and partner capacity.
  • Identifies and engages in partnership opportunities at global, national, or local levels.
  • Provides capacity to communities of practice and networks of practitioners.
  • Works with other relevant TNC global programs on overlapping initiatives.
  • Provides general logistical, administrative, and coordination support to the program.
  • Organizes and manages both virtual and in-person events.
  • Creates and oversees contracts.
  • May include travel up to 15% both US domestically and internationally and occasional work on weekends and evenings.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in conservation, equity and rights, community development, natural resource management or related field and 3 years of related experience, or equivalent experience.
  • International or cross-cultural work experience.
  • Experience working with Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
  • Experience supporting or co-leading complex projects and strategic initiatives in an unstructured environment with a senior level manager within the Conservancy or a comparable organization.
  • Analytical and project management experience.
  • Experience meeting deadlines.
  • Experience developing end products with software such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, cloud, and web-based tools including SharePoint, Zoom/conferencing software, Skype, Google Hangouts, and Drobox or similar tools.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills (proficiency in Bahasa Indonesian, Mongolian, Spanish, French, Swahili, and/or Portuguese a plus) and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience.
  • Experience in implementing work plans (including outcomes and goals) with limited direct supervision.
  • Experience in developing and managing contracts.
  • Virtual and/or in-person event planning experience.
  • Knowledge of political and social landscapes with respect to Indigenous Peoples, local communities, community development, environmental and international affairs.
  • Experience in gender equity integration, youth engagement and/or human rights.
  • Experience in learning and developing expertise related to conservation strategies, socio-economic drivers, capacity-building methodologies, and rights and equity approaches.
  • Experience working as a team member, relationships building and working collaboratively across a highly matrixed organization, including with field staff in different countries, with senior management, and with Conservancy partners.
  • NGO experience preferred.
