Part-Time Part-time Transit Operator/Worker
Job Description
Operate a public bus in the transportation of persons according to a predetermined route and timetable. Maintain order on board city bus by giving clear and precise instructions to passengers and requesting assistance if needed. Work under close supervision of the Transit Operations Supervisor and Maintenance Supervisor. Availability to work Monday through Saturday for 10 to 29 hours per week.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLIITIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Operator Duties:
• Safely operate a large passenger vehicle in moderate to heavy traffic.
• Collect and tally fares.
• Issue and collect transfers.
• Sell punch passes.
• Board and alight passengers at established stops.
• Load and properly secure wheelchair bound passengers at established stops.
• Give clear and detailed directions to passengers in response to questions.
• Maintain order in the vehicle.
• Prepare clear and detailed written reports.
• Follow all safety practices and standards.
• Clearly broadcast ADA required announcements in English.
• Act as an ambassador for the transit system.
• Assist passengers when necessary or requested.
Worker Duties:
• Clean buses
• Clean and do light maintenance in the Transit Bus Garage
• Perform related work as required.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and experience:
• Graduation from high school (diploma) or GED equivalent.
• Possess and maintain valid WI CDL, Class B with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction.
• Possess a good driving record.
• Previous experience driving buses or trucks.
• Previous experience working flexible work schedules including days, evenings, Saturdays, holidays and split shifts.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Working knowledge of public bus operations.
• Working knowledge of defensive driving techniques.
• Working knowledge of motor vehicle laws.
• Knowledge in the use and operation of two way radio communications systems.
• Working knowledge of work hazards and safe driving techniques.
• Ability to operate a large transit vehicle on schedule and in all weather conditions.
• Ability to cope with stress, make independent decisions and exercise sound judgment in stressful or emergency situations.
• Ability to withstand local weather conditions.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen and breath alcohol test, pre-employment physical ability test, pre-employment medical exam
• Ability to maintain effective relationships with supervisors, other employees and the public and to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
• Ability to comply with the Federal Transit Administration Drug and Alcohol Policy.
• Ability to effectively deal with ADA service requirements in a safe manner.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to maintain reliable attendance and promptness in reporting to work.
• Ability to successfully complete bus operator exams.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to operate controls and to steer the vehicle. This position requires the employee to use legs and feet to operate the accelerator and the brake. The employee is frequently required to stoop or kneel to secure wheelchairs into the restraints. The employee is occasionally required to walk and frequently required to sit, talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust and focus. The employee is required to be able to physically assist passengers with disabilities including assisting a person using a mobility devise.

The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy.
