GBLS has an opening for a part-time (50%) long-term temporary attorney, for January through June 2020, in its Low Income Tax Clinic, which is part of the Employment Law Unit.
The attorney will work in a high-volume practice representing immigrant clients in cases involving tax controversies, defined as legal disputes with the IRS or the DOR concerning taxable income and taxes owed or due to the taxpayer as refunds. Cases include return examinations (audits), claims for refunds, and collections. Typical clients are immigrant families whose refunds are frozen pending verification of eligibility for tax credits, filing status, and/or dependency allowance, or who are misclassified as independent contractors. Where tax collection is warranted, the clinic helps clients find alternatives to full payment, including installment plans, offers in compromise, or bankruptcy.
The attorney will handle existing caseload under the supervision of a Senior Attorney,
Qualifications: Candidate must be admitted to the Mass. Bar. Entry-level attorneys will be considered for this position, but candidates must have experience with and/or commitment to working with low-income clients and preferably will have familiarity with general income tax and/or financial due diligence. Excellent writing skills required, and bilingual ability in Spanish or Portuguese strongly preferred.
Salary is based on a union scale with a starting salary of $59,000. This position does not include benefits.
