Job Description

Entry level Packaging Engineer who works cross-functionally to specify and design expendable and returnable packaging for inbound raw material, internal material flow, finished products, and aftermarket parts. Delivers environmentally sustainable packaging solutions with attention to vendor relations, material and part specifications, line efficiencies, and other internal functional group requirements.

Supports packaging development and requirements under the new product introduction process.

Works cross-functionally and with customers and suppliers to specify design requirements for expendable and returnable packaging and containers for finished products and raw material components.

Supports continuous improvement in the supply chain, improving total cost and/or customer/supplier quality.

Works cross-functionally and with customers and suppliers to identify and deliver improvements to packaging of current products in order to improve quality and reduce total cost, material handling and waste disposal.

Develops site specific packaging guidelines in alignment with Cummins Global Packaging Standards while considering safety, storage, line side presentation needs, and equipment constraints.

Reviews and approves supplier Packaging Data Sheets for compliance to Cummins Global Packaging Standards.

Ensures ISPM15 and other regulatory requirements on international shipments are met for inbound and outbound shipments.

Plans and prioritizes projects to drive timely results aligned with organizational goals.

Applies business acumen in cost-based analysis and decision making.

Operations Integration in Industrial Packaging – Demonstrates and applies knowledge of manufacturing process, equipment and the physical flows of inbound parts to finished goods to establish industrial packaging methods and equipment that integrate safely and efficiently into the operational environment.

 

Industrial Packaging Design – Develops primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging designs for industrial products through the application of engineering techniques to ensure product protection for all touch points of an end to end supply chain.

 

Environmentally Sustainable Packaging Principles – Outlines the environmentally sustainable packaging material selection and its life cycle impact by describing selection criteria, performance considerations and application in designing order to achieve the goal to reduce, reuse, recycle or reclaim.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

Bachelor degree in Engineering or related discipline is required. Packaging Engineering or Packaging Science degree is highly preferred.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

 

Experience

Internship or equivalent experience in packaging-related field This position will lead Packaging Engineering for both  Joint Venture Operations and Memphis Distribution Center. This position will be based in Memphis but require some travel to Indiana to work closely with the JVO team to deliver improved and optimized packaging solutions for new and current parts.
