Colorado Mental Health Institute – Pueblo provides comprehensive psychiatric and medical evaluation and treatment by a multi-disciplinary treatment team.  This includes:  24 hour nursing care and assessment; psychiatric intervention and evaluation; psychological services; psycho-social services; occupational therapy, educational and vocational rehabilitation services and recreational therapy. Patients are admitted from throughout the state from correctional, state mental health systems, and other community facilities for long and short term treatment under court authority, as well as transfers from within CMHIP.  Legal statuses of patients include 27-65 Civil commitments (M-1, M-3, Short and Long Term certifications); Dual Diagnosed (Substance Abuse and Mentally Ill); Developmental Disability/Mentally Ill; Incompetent to Proceed (ITP); Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity or Impaired Mental Condition (NGRI or NGR-IMC); court ordered evaluations for Sanity, Sex Offender issues, Competency; and Correctional transfers from Department of Corrections. CMHIP provides psychiatric services for adolescent and adult patients.

This position provides fully operational Occupational Therapy services including evaluation and individual/group treatment. The Ooccupational Therapist (OT) supports the goals of the Occupation Therapy department in alignment with the mission and vision of CMHIP.

The Occupational Therapist (OT) advises for placement and discharge based on evaluation and outcome of treatment and supervises treatment to elicit highest level of functioning while insuring safety. The OT provides clinical supervision of Occupational Therapy treatment services to include the Occupational Therapy Assistants.  The purpose of these occupations is to provide therapy to restore physical and mental life functions.

Job Duties:

  • The Occupational Therapist is responsible for the completion of the initial occupational therapy assessments for patients’ hospital wide. Plans and implements Occupational therapy treatment, which is carried out by the occupational therapy team. Must be able to write and speak effectively documenting findings and maintain accurate records. Completes monthly reassessments updating the progress and Occupational therapy portion of the plan of care. Completes all discharge assessments when client no longer receives direct Occupational therapy treatment. Provides direct patient care in groups or individualized treatment sessions. Interacts with patients, some of whom are considered highly dangerous. Takes patients from a secured area to less secure area for treatment, which may involve physical control. Maintains security and teaches safety and emergency procedures within the Occupational Therapy clinic. Must have the ability to comprehend, teach and execute Occupational therapy programs to patients, staff and family members.
  • The OT must document the initial occupational therapy assessment and provide the occupational therapy plan of care to the treatment team and the Occupational Therapy Assistants. Addresses OT orders in BHER. Per hospital guidelines, the OT also documents the patients’ progress and any necessary changes in the plan of care.  Provides the treating Occupational Therapy Assistants and treatment team any changes made.  Responsible for any weekly documentation for patients she/he provides treatment to, as per plan of care. Responsible for appropriate billing for any services provided by the OT.
  • This position provides clinical supervision of Occupational Therapy Assistants who must be supervised by an OT under Colorado law. The OT supervises clinical tasks including review of programming, treatment provided, documentation and billing practices completed by the Occupational Therapy Assistants.
  • Reviews programs; prepares educational material to enhance the OT and team programs. Participate in supervisory meetings with OT department director including the roll of liaison between director and those the position clinically supervises.
  • Responsible for provision and overseeing supplies and equipment for the delivery of OT services and activities provided by the Occupational therapy assigned area. This may include teaching materials, crafts, food, money management and other daily living skills. This may include purchasing materials, reading materials for use, maintaining supply inventory, and inventory for MSDS and sharps/counted supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Current, valid licensure with Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) to practice Occupational Therapy.

AND

One year of Occupational Therapy experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Current NBCOT certification
  • Current membership with AOTA

  • A pre-employment criminal background check will be conducted as part of the selection process as this position is deemed to have direct contact with vulnerable persons. Felony convictions, conviction of crimes of moral turpitude, or convictions of misdemeanors related to job duties may disqualify you from being considered for this position. Should your background check reveal any charges or convictions, it is your responsibility to provide the CDHS Background Unit with an official disposition of any charges. Additionally, you will be required take and pass a drug screen.
  • Must take Tuberculosis (TB) test
  • Travel Requirement:  This position requires in-state travel; therefore a valid State of Colorado Driver’s License is required.
  • Current  and valid occupational therapy (OT) license through the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA).
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose the information on the application and provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position.  Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.
