Job Description
The Oak Openings Restoration Crew Member performs land restoration and management activities on TNC property, partner, and privately-owned lands in the Oak Openings Region of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.
The Oak Openings Restoration Crew Member performs land restoration and management activities in the Oak Openings Region of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. This will include invasive plant control using herbicide and mechanical methods, and may include seed collecting, seed planting, tree removal, mowing, litter clean-up, and prescribed burning. He/she will be responsible for preparation and maintenance of equipment and tools used in management activities. The Oak Openings Restoration Crew Member is supervised by the Oak Openings Restoration Manager. This is a full time, short-term position (approximately 6 months from mid-May to mid-November) that involves extensive outdoor physical labor in diverse weather conditions and may require working some weekends. Preference will be given to applicants with experience using large farm equipment (e.g., tractor, skid steer), chainsaws, brush cutters. Willingness to obtain commercial or registered pesticide applicator licenses in Ohio and Michigan is required.
Supervises no staff but may help supervise volunteers.
May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
Operates vehicles in a safe manner, including on-road and off-road conditions.
Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
Requires long hours in isolated outdoor settings.
Makes day-to-day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
May work under close supervision or infrequent supervision
Consults supervisor on unusual or complex issues.
Ability to convey work instructions to other restoration crew members and volunteers.
Ability to interact with the public and to convey basic natural history and restoration information.
Ability to function productively as a team member.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Experience performing physical work.
Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or inclement weather.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma and 1 – 2 years’ training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
Experience working with, or knowledge of, natural systems.
Ability to recognize plant and animal species in northern Ohio and southern Michigan.
Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. chainsaws, brush cutters, 4wd trucks, tractor, skid steer, UTVs, etc.).
PC familiarity, including database knowledge and accessing the internet.
Training or certifications needed to perform job duties (e.g. prescribed fire FFT2, prescribed fire physical fitness test, herbicide application, driver’s license).
