We are seeking a Director of Network Communications and Engagement to join our National Development and Marketing Team. This position serves as lead connector and communicator between the national office and chapters, supporting and promoting network-wide collaboration to advance shared goals and opportunities.
The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and proven ability to build trusted professional relationships with individuals representing diverse backgrounds and perspectives. They will have experience building consensus and leading teams. Basic Function / Position Objective:
Friends of the Children began with just a few Friends and children in Portland, Oregon in 1993. Today, we are a national network serving thousands of youth and their caregivers at 26 locations (and growing) across the country. This position, which reports to the Chief Officer of Expansion and Policy, will work with the national team to amplify the diversity, strength and expertise of staff, youth and caregivers across our national network. They will be responsible for creating clear and actionable communication channels within the network and for activating network engagement toward shared goals. They will participate in cross-functional efforts that require network involvement, such as our 30th anniversary campaign, and will be a resource to national team and the network in the areas of brand-building and communications. They will also be responsible for ensuring that network-wide tools, such as our data management or training systems, our national collateral, etc. are engaging and clearly communicate the mission, values and goals of the organization. This position serves as lead connector and communicator between the national office and chapters, supporting and promoting network-wide collaboration to advance shared goals and opportunities.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Lead internal (to the national office) and network-wide communications in partnership with other team leaders.
- Cultivate and maintain strong, positive relationships with leaders and staff across the national network.
- Serve as liaison with the network, focusing on areas relating to celebration, innovation, and the advancement of national/chapter partnership work.
- Collaborate with national and network leaders to plan and drive chapter engagement in network-wide campaigns, such as the 30th anniversary campaign celebrating the program model, National Foster Care Month, and Mental Health Awareness Month.
- Support the national leadership team to build a successful and healthy organization through consistent and clear communication channels and feedback loops throughout the network.
- Communicate organizational priorities, activities, and results to the network, while ensuring that deliverables are met.
- Support cross-functional alignment efforts within the national team, with an emphasis on maximizing the opportunity for clear communication across departments so that goals and strategies are achieved on time and on budget.
- Support the Director of Marketing and Communications as a co-manager of the organization’s brand system, ensuring that the brand is maintained with equity lens and integrated across the network and at national throughout all projects and communications always communicating our values.
- Ensure that national materials and network-wide systems are engaging and clearly communicate our mission, values and goals with an asset-framed lens.
- Cultivate and maintain key organizational relationships with National and network staff.
- Identify and take on ad hoc strategic projects – everything from defining new opportunities to executing cross-functional initiatives – with a focus on activating network engagement toward shared goals.

- Proven ability to track, prioritize, and drive multiple concurrent projects to success. This position is expected to utilize data to communicate needs.
- A good sounding board for others, with low ego, and ability to anticipate the needs of a busy executive and his/her direct staff.
- Analytic and decisive decision maker with the ability to prioritize and communicate to staff key objectives and tactics necessary to achieve organizational goals.
Required Education, Experience, and Abilities:
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership and/or management position that included executive-level advising and interdepartmental or interagency collaboration.
- Experience working and communicating across an internal network of stakeholders (chapters, sites, members, etc).
- Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications or another relevant field required. Graduate degree in a related field is desirable.
- Demonstrated experience as a communicator with strong verbal and written communications skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice.
Compensation and Benefits:
$85K-$115K (Compensation commensurate with experience and geographical location)
