Full-Time Michigan – Deputy Organizing Director

Job Description

NextGen America is seeking a passionate, hardworking candidate to join our youth organizing program that will engage young people in state, local and national fights to elect Democrats up and down the ballot in 2020. The Deputy Organizing Director will help manage our field team in Michigan as part of this ambitious effort.

In Michigan, this effort will focus on virtually organizing young people in targeted cities, regions, and campuses to build political organizing community and turn out the #youthvote. Our work will focus on registering voters, encouraging them to vote by mail and build towards a massive 2020 electoral program. This cycle’s program will include virtual electoral organizing tactics such as online pledge to votes, phone banking, peer-to-peer text banking, using social media, planning virtual events and more. In addition, this role will assist in managing Regional Organizing Directors with teams on and off campus and will report to the Michigan Organizing Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the management of the statewide youth voter engagement program, particularly through coaching regional organizing directors
  • Assist in holding regional organizing directors and organizers accountable to metrics and goals; ensure timely and accurate data and field reporting from field staff
  • Help lead daily, weekly, and monthly training webinars and workshops.
  • Give input on opportunities to engage in local and state issues and campaigns
  • Support the state HQ management team to develop and execute campaign programs and effective organizing tactics including grassroots virtual voter contact and some creative earned media actions.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with young activists around the state, and identify opportunities for partnerships
  • Assist the Operations Director with larger event logistics including weeks of action.
  • Assist in the creation and implementation of Welcome Week, GOTV (Get-Out-The-Vote), and National Voter Registration Day plans.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • 2-3 year’s experience managing organizers or regional organizing directors
  • Self-motivated and communicative
  • Organized; excellent written, verbal and presentation communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues and outside organizations and to balance multiple priorities without sacrificing quality of work
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Ability to foster a cooperative, team-oriented work environment
  • Previous youth organizing experience not required, but a strong a plus
  • Experience working with VAN or Votebuilder is required.

BONUS POINTS:

  • Experience with both issue and electoral organizing
  • Experience organizing in communities of color and prior training in anti-oppression, equity and inclusion organizing
  • Experience on one or more campaigns in Michigan at the local or state level

COMPENSATION:

Salary of $5,150/month plus a comprehensive benefits package.
