Job Description
The Workplace Justice Lab @ Rutgers University tackles inequality and worker exploitation by supporting, strengthening, and fostering innovation in government and by building the membership and leadership bases of unions, worker centers, community organizing groups and other economic justice organizations. WJL is a multi-institutional partnership anchored at Rutgers University with sister centers at Northwestern University and the Pilipino Workers Center of Southern California.
We’re looking for a team leader who is passionate about workers rights and economic justice and who has deep experience in high-level administration, strategic leadership, and organizational management to manage the operations and growth of our center, where:
- Our Beyond the Bill program works with local, state, and federal labor agencies to significantly shift their approach to labor law enforcement to raise job quality across low wage, high exploitation sectors. We offer customized state and local strategic enforcement research, training, and in-depth planning and technical assistance; we design and facilitate strong collaborations between agencies and worker justice organizations; and we lead cutting edge research projects on labor violations.
- Our ground-breaking Build the Base, Grow the Movement training and coaching program supports learning and experimentation around a distributed organizing model for worker justice organizations to expand their membership bases and grow their leadership teams.
- We convene powerful communities of practice among government agencies interested in strategic enforcement and among organizing groups interested in leveraging labor policy and enforcement structures at the local and state level to build worker power and organization.
Key Job Qualifications
This is a key senior leadership position that reports to the Faculty Director. We are looking for someone:
- who has a proven track record in administrative management and wants to lead the day-to-day operations of a team of national experts in their fields.
- who has experience and comfort working within, and is not daunted by, universities or other large bureaucratic organizations.
- who has experience in fundraising/funder communications, financial oversight, and grant management.
- with a strong background in project management, staff hiring and supervision.
- who is an effective communicator, adept at external communications, and comfortable with technology.
- with experience in labor, community organizing, or other social justice work.
- who is ready to provide leadership, direction, and coordination to a dynamic and growing national worker justice resource.
- who lives, or is willing to live in, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania or Delaware in a commutable distance from Rutgers’ New Brunswick campus.
Key Job Responsibilities
The key responsibilities of the Managing Director include:
- Managing complex administrative functions across multiple entities.
- Manage pre and post activities for all grants and fee-for-service contracts.
- Oversee the Center’s multiple budgets, working with the Dean’s office to prepare and manage annual budgets, a 2-year budget, individual grant budgets, and programmatic budgets.
- Manage HR functions for WJL, including overseeing hiring processes and managing the culture of a team working mostly remotely and across different institutions.
- Provide daily leadership, direction, and coordination for the Center in partnership with the Faculty Director.
- Directly oversee a full-time support staff member, including performance evaluation, hiring, and firing.
- Lead work with the Faculty Director and professional staff on fundraising, grant writing activities, and building a strategic plan for growth including researching, mapping, monitoring, and evaluating funding opportunities.
- Manage external communications, in partnership with Faculty Director, school media director, and consultants.
- Manage and implement ongoing strategic planning, overseeing activities related to annual team planning, and in-person meetings with external partners.
- With Faculty Director, manage relationships within the School of Management and Labor Relations in addition to other relationships at Rutgers.
This is a full-time position. This position will be performed in-person in New Brunswick, NJ with the opportunity to work up to three days a week remotely. The position will involve travel to meetings beyond Rutgers 1-2 times a year, which will be reimbursed.

Starting salary range: $91,297 – $121,354
