Reporting to the Senior Manager, Communications, the Manager, Communications manages the communications, media relations, influencer engagement and publicity efforts to manage the organization’s reputation and secure earned media for TIFF’s Festival, year-round programming and special initiatives that support revenue generation and engage audiences as part of TIFF’s overall strategic goals and mission.

The Manager, Communications is a team-oriented individual who is a problem-solver and solutions-oriented. They are able to work within a dynamic environment and balance multiple priorities. They are highly motivated and are excited to collaborate with others and have the ability to build on ideas.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises, guides, coaches and provides feedback to Coordinator, Communications, and a small team of seasonal communications staff or freelancers
  • Communications lead for TIFF’s special projects and initiatives including special filmmaker retrospectives, DEI initiatives, Audience & Community year-round programming and subscription series, Cinematheque, and partnership projects
  • Manages and maintains data on impact measurements and other related public reporting data for communications purposes
  • Oversees initiatives that work towards increasing diverse representation to shape the future of film reporting and conversations in the media landscape, including TIFF’s Media Inclusion Initiative
  • Supports the Senior Manager, Communications in developing plans to grow relationships with press
  • Develops and manages TIFF’s influencer program and provides consultation to other TIFF teams (marketing, corporate partners, advancement) on how to incorporate influencers into activities
  • Manages talent relations as it relates to programming publicity; working with publicists and key talent stakeholders, including studios
  • Manages news-related press opportunities across year-round programming streams, including interview preparation with key TIFF spokespeople
  • Works with communications team leaders (senior manager, director, vice-president) on reputation and issues management
  • Supports the development of key messaging documents for TIFF spokespersons and support media training for TIFF spokespersons as required
  • Acts as a brand champion to validate how brand voice and visual story is communicated across channels, ensuring consistency and factual data
  • Uses established organizational guidelines to make decisions, seeking supervisor input if there is ambiguity
  • Uses assigned resources effectively to satisfy quality and stakeholder needs
  • Manages day-to-day operational expenses
  • Maintains and improve relationships with existing internal and external stakeholders

START DATE:

  • January 5, 2022

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Post-secondary degree/certificate in communications, public/media relations, film or journalism, preferred but not required
  • 5+ years of experience in communications and/or public/media relations, either in an agency setting with entertainment or arts clients or working in the entertainment or arts sectors
  • A proven track record of managing direct reports, working with creative, artistic and business teams, developing insights as well as being accountable for managing internal resources, timelines and strategic deliverables is critical
  • Exceptional organizational skills, along with a high level of professionalism and diplomacy
  • Fluency in French or other languages a great asset
  • Superior storyteller (both written and verbal) with a clear and concise style
  • Excellent capacity to refine information in order to reveal an insight
  • Ability to develop relationships with local, national and international entertainment media outlets and journalists
  • Ability to deal with high-profile talent and their representatives
  • Ability to handle high-pressure situations
  • Able to manage year-round and seasonal direct reports
  • Able to Concentrate for prolonged periods at computer terminals
  • Working under many simultaneous deadlines and regular interruptions
  • 9am-5pm, Monday thru Friday, with more intensive schedule during Festival
  • Overtime required in high-pressure situations
