Full-Time Landscape Operations Grounds Specialist

Job Description

This position involves skilled and manual labor in performing and leading the work on the maintenance of equipment, buildings and grounds, working either independently or collectively depending on the work or on supervisor’s instructions. The primary location of the work will be at the City operated cemeteries, with other duties as assigned on other City properties.

Work involves participation in the activities of the Parks Maintenance Workers or leading the work of the Parks Maintenance Worker, and participation in the construction and maintenance activities of parks and cemeteries, as well as assisting with equipment maintenance and repair while working closely with the Landscape Operations Manager and the Landscape Operations Lead Worker.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Work with crews on the maintenance of cemetery and park grounds, excavation and backfilling of burial spaces; perform preventative maintenance of landscape related equipment, tree and shrub care; perform snow removal and ice control on city properties and general site maintenance; operate equipment such as trucks, tractors, backhoes mowers, skid steers and snowplows. 50%
• Load and unload materials and equipment; assist with repairs and maintenance to park and cemetery machinery and equipment including but not limited to: tractors, trucks, mowers, trailers, line trimmers, blowers, snowplows, and other small engine tools. 25%
• Lead and work with crews to complete projects and tasks. 10%
• Trim trees and other foliage; participate in landscaping activities. 10%
• Perform other duties as assigned. 5%

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
• High School diploma required; technical training in horticulture, landscape construction, forestry or grounds maintenance preferred.
• Two years of experience in facility maintenance work, grounds maintenance, and small engine maintenance and repair.
• Possess and maintain a WI Class A CDL with no air brake restriction, or have the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques used in parks, cemetery, construction, and maintenance.
• Ability to lead and work with a small group of people.
• Ability to interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Ability to complete necessary paperwork.
• Ability to withstand a variety of outdoor weather conditions, temperatures, and working conditions.
• Ability to maintain effective relationships with other employees and to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
• Ability to work in a safe manner.
• Ability to repair and maintain small engines and tools.
• Ability to be a self-starter and work independently/collectively.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Motorized vehicles for grounds maintenance purposes, backhoe tractor, dump truck, snow plow, chain saw, power and hand tools, and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; computer, calculator and phone.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, talk, or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to work near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions in the field.

The employee is occasionally exposed to wet, cold and humid conditions and fumes, toxic, or caustic chemicals.

The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy.
