Bowls England, the National Governing Body for the Sport of Flat Green Lawn Bowls, is seeking to recruit an Independent Director with responsibility for Marketing & Communications to join its Board of Directors.
Lawn bowls is a truly inclusive sport – played by all ages, genders and abilities – however it is widely recognised that the sport is in need of modernisation to encourage future participation.
Bowls England currently has more than 100,000 individual members in its clubs across 35 counties in England. Individual bowlers, clubs and county associations are supported by a staff team of nine from our headquarters in Royal Leamington Spa.
Lawn Bowls is a core sport in the Commonwealth Games. The 2022 Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham therefore represents a once in a generation opportunity to raise the profile and update the image of the sport. Bowls England wants to ensure that we, and our affiliated clubs, are ready to respond to the increased interest in the sport before, during and after the Commonwealth Games, and the successful candidate will have a key role to play in helping us to achieve this objective.

• Marketing strategy
• Communications and media relations
• Brand development and promotion
• Marketing collateral
• Leading a marketing/communications team
• Communication/engagement with key stakeholders and sponsors
Experience of the sporting sector would be an advantage but prior experience of lawn bowls is not required. The Independent Director (Marketing & Communications) will have the following responsibilities:
• Development & implementation of strategic marketing plan
• Communications plan & activities
• Branding
• Marketing collateral
• Leading marketing working group
As the appointment is for an Independent Director, candidates must not have been employed by Bowls England, been a Director of Bowls England, or involved with any national‐level Committee or Working Party of Bowls England in the seven years prior to their application. Candidates must also not have been a professional advisor to Bowls England, a supplier of services or equipment to Bowls England and preferably should not have been actively involved in an official capacity in any County Association affiliated to Bowls England, over the same period.
Bowls England currently holds four Board meetings per year in Royal Leamington Spa, usually on week days, and Board Members are also expected to attend a number of other key events during the year, some of which are at the weekend. All Directors of Bowls England are unpaid although all reasonable out‐of‐pocket expenses will be refunded in line with our expenses policy.
The successful candidate will serve until the Annual General Meeting in February 2023 and the appointment is potentially renewable.
Bowls England is committed to ensuring diversity in our sport and welcomes applications for all its activities from individuals regardless of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender, social background, age or disability.
